Luke 2:1-3

There went out a decree from Cesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed opens the nativity with Rome's own administrative machinery, an empire-wide census enrolling every subject by name. This taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria has troubled historians because Josephus dates Quirinius's governorship and its census to about AD 6, a decade after Herod's death in 4 BC; the commentators hold multiple solutions honestly, an earlier enrollment ordered while Quirinius held an earlier post or command in the region, or Luke's own word first distinguishing this census from the later, better known one Quirinius conducted. All went to be taxed, every one into his own city, describes an enrollment by ancestral city rather than current residence, the very requirement that puts a pregnant woman from Nazareth on the road to Bethlehem.

Luke 2:4-5

Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David: Luke states the Davidic descent as simple fact, the same claim Matthew's genealogy establishes by a different route. Bethlehem was not required by the census alone; the commentators read Rome's decree as the means and Micah 5:2's prophecy of the ruler out of Bethlehem as the end, a pagan emperor's paperwork serving a promise made seven centuries earlier. To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child, states the hardship without comment, a betrothed woman near her time making a difficult trip on the word of a foreign census.

Luke 2:6-7

While they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered states the timing without drama, the child arriving on Rome's own schedule and errand. She brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger: firstborn carries no denial of later siblings, only birth order, and swaddling was ordinary, careful infant care, the same practice Ezekiel 16:4 assumes as normal. Because there was no room for them in the inn: the Greek word for inn, kataluma, is the same word Luke later uses for a guest room, and the commentators note that Joseph's own relatives in his ancestral town would ordinarily have taken him in, so the likelier picture is a crowded family home whose guest room was already full, the birth happening in the lower room where animals were kept for the night rather than a stranger turned away at a roadside inn.

Luke 2:8-10

Shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night receive the first announcement of the Messiah's birth, men of low social standing in that world, whose testimony was not even admissible in a Jewish court, chosen anyway as the first witnesses. Some commentators note the flocks near Bethlehem may have supplied the Temple's own sacrificial lambs, drawing on the tradition around Migdal Eder in Micah 4:8, a detail worth naming though the text itself does not state it directly. The angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were sore afraid, the same fear that met Zacharias in the Temple now meeting shepherds in an open field. Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people opens the joy thread of this Gospel at its widest reach, good news aimed not at Israel narrowly but at all people.

Luke 2:11-12

For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord opens the today thread this Gospel returns to again and again, salvation announced in the present tense rather than as a future hope. Three titles stack in one clause, Saviour, Christ, and Lord, a density of confession the angels give before any disciple has said a word of it, naming his office, his anointing, and his deity together. Luke 2:13-14

Luke 2:15-17

Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass shows the shepherds acting the moment the angels leave, no delay between hearing the word and testing it. They came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger, the same haste Mary showed at 1:39, and the scene matches the angel's sign exactly, swaddling clothes and manger both, the word confirmed by sight. When they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child: unlettered shepherds become the Gospel's first preachers, carrying the news to whoever would listen before a single apostle is called.

Luke 2:18-20

All they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds names a passing astonishment, the crowd's ordinary response to a strange report. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart stands apart from that wonder, the same reflective habit Luke already noted at 1:29 and will note again at verse 51, treasuring rather than merely marveling, the beginning of a lifetime spent turning these events over. The shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen closes the scene where it opened, ordinary men praising God exactly as the angels had, heaven's song now sung back by earth.

Luke 2:21

When eight days were accomplished for the circumcising of the child, his name was called JESUS mirrors John's own naming at 1:59-63 almost exactly, both boys brought under the covenant sign on the appointed day. Luke 2:22-24

When the days of her purification according to the law of Moses were accomplished, they brought him to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord combines two requirements of the law, Mary's own forty-day purification from childbirth under Leviticus 12, and the presentation of every firstborn male as holy to the Lord under Exodus 13:2. Every male that openeth the womb shall be called holy to the Lord normally required a redemption payment of five shekels under Numbers 18:15-16, and the commentators note the text records no such payment here, a silence some read as fitting, since this firstborn is not one who needs buying back but the one who does the redeeming. A pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons was the offering Leviticus 12:8 permits to a mother too poor to afford a lamb, and Luke's plain record of it places the holy family among the poor whose reversal this whole Gospel keeps singing about.

Luke 2:25-27

There was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and the same man was just and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel introduces one of only two named individuals given a direct Spirit-filled testimony in this chapter, his hope named in a phrase that echoes the whole Old Testament's longing for comfort, Isaiah 40:1's very word. It was revealed unto him by the Holy Ghost, that he should not see death, before he had seen the Lord’s Christ gives Simeon a personal promise from God, one man's whole life narrowed to a single expected day. He came by the Spirit into the temple, no accident of timing but a man led there by the same Spirit that had made him the promise, arriving at the very hour Joseph and Mary bring the child in.

Luke 2:28-32

Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said opens the Nunc Dimittis, the third of Luke's great canticles, an old man's whole prayer answered in the weight of one infant. Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: the peace thread that closed Zacharias's song returns here as Simeon's own release, content to die now that his eyes have seen thy salvation, salvation itself standing in his arms rather than merely promised to him. Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people states the child's scope as public and universal from the start, and a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel gives the child a double honor rather than a trade, light reaching outward to the nations and glory remaining Israel's own, the same both-and this whole site holds rather than reading one people's gain as another's loss.

Luke 2:33-35

Joseph and his mother marvelled at those things which were spoken of him shows the parents still learning who this child is even as they carry out the law's requirements around him. Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against turns the canticle's brightness toward the coming conflict, the same stone Isaiah 8:14-15 calls both a foundation and a stumbling block now named as a person, dividing Israel rather than uniting it automatically. Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also is addressed to Mary alone, the first hint in the Gospel of the grief she will carry to the foot of the cross, her own suffering bound up in her son's rejection. That the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed states the purpose behind the division, Christ himself becoming the test that exposes what people actually love.

Luke 2:36-38

There was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser names a woman from Asher, one of the ten northern tribes commonly assumed lost to history, quiet evidence that faithful Israelites from beyond Judah still kept the hope alive. She was of a great age, and had lived with an husband seven years from her virginity, and she was a widow of about fourscore and four years; the Greek allows either a widow who was herself eighty-four years old or a widow of eighty-four years' standing, and the commentators note both readings honestly without needing to choose, either way an extraordinarily long life given to fasting and prayer in the Temple. She coming in that instant gave thanks likewise unto the Lord, and spake of him to all them that looked for redemption in Jerusalem pairs her with Simeon as Luke's second Spirit-led witness in this scene, a prophetess as much a herald of the Messiah as the old man beside her, in keeping with this Gospel's steady habit of naming women alongside men.

Luke 2:39-40

When they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned into Galilee, to their own city Nazareth closes the presentation narrative, and the commentators note Luke simply does not narrate the Magi's visit, the flight into Egypt, or Herod's slaughter of the infants that Matthew records, each Gospel writer selecting from a larger body of events exactly as Luke's own preface promised, not two conflicting stories but two complementary selections. The child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom: and the grace of God was upon him repeats the same compressed formula already given for John at 1:80, ordinary human growth undergone by the Son of God without shortcut or exemption. The bench reads this verse as guarding the true humanity of Christ as carefully as the earlier chapter guarded his deity, a real child growing in a real household.

Luke 2:41-45

His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the feast of the passover records a family's ordinary devotion, and when he was twelve years old, they went up to Jerusalem after the custom of the feast, twelve being the year just before a Jewish boy took on the full responsibilities of the law, so this becomes his first recorded appearance as a boy approaching that threshold. When they had fulfilled the days, as they returned, the child Jesus tarried behind in Jerusalem; and Joseph and his mother knew not of it describes an entirely plausible loss in a large company of relatives and neighbours travelling together, where a boy of twelve could easily go unmissed for a day among people who each assumed he was with someone else. But they, supposing him to have been in the company, went a day's distance before discovering the mistake, and they sought him among their kinsfolk and acquaintance before turning back again to Jerusalem, seeking him, three full days lost by the time the search finally narrows to the city itself.

Luke 2:46-47

after three days they found him: After three days they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, both hearing them, and asking them questions gives the search its own quiet echo of the three days that will one day separate his death from his rising, though the text itself makes nothing explicit of the parallel. He is found in the Temple courts among the recognized teachers of the law, and the posture Luke describes is a learner's posture, hearing and asking questions, not the theatrical wonder-working the later noncanonical infancy gospels invented for this age, a restraint the commentators contrast favorably with those legendary accounts. All that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers, real precocious wisdom in a twelve-year-old rather than any claim to adult teaching authority he has not yet taken up.

Luke 2:48-50

When they saw him, they were amazed, and his mother said unto him, Son, why hast thou thus dealt with us, behold, thy father and I have sought thee sorrowing, voices ordinary parental relief and reproach together, Joseph named father in the plain speech of daily life without any conflict with the virgin conception already declared. He answers, wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business, asking in his turn how it was that they sought him at all, and this gives the Gospel its first recorded words from Jesus himself, the word must, the same divine necessity that will govern his whole path to the cross, appearing here for the first time in his own mouth at twelve years old. They understood not the saying which he spake unto them is a striking admission, that even Mary, who had heard Gabriel and treasured Simeon's words, did not yet grasp the full shape of what her son had just said.

Luke 2:51-52

He went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them closes the boy's one recorded act of independence with eighteen years of ordinary obedience, the eternal Son submitting to human parents in the same household duty every child owes. His mother kept all these sayings in her heart repeats the pattern already given at verse 19, Mary's habit of treasuring rather than merely reacting, now including a saying she did not yet fully understand. Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man closes the chapter with a fourfold growth, mind, body, standing before God, and standing before people, the same language 1 Samuel 2:26 gives the boy Samuel growing up before the Lord, a deliberate echo of the last child Israel had raised up to speak for God before John and Jesus both arrived.
