John 10:1-3

Verily, verily, I say unto you continues the confrontation of chapter nine without a scene change, the healed blind man's expulsion by the Pharisees still in view when Jesus begins this figure of speech. He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way describes exactly what the Pharisees have just done to the man they cast out, claiming authority over God's flock while bypassing the one legitimate entrance. The porter openeth and the sheep hear his voice, and he calleth his own sheep by name pictures the Palestinian custom of several flocks sharing one enclosure overnight under a single keeper, each true shepherd able to call his own animals out by name while the others stay put.

John 10:4-5

When he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them describes a shepherd leading from in front rather than a Western style of driving a flock from behind, the sheep following because they know his voice rather than being forced along. A stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him extends the figure to false teachers, whose voice the sheep instinctively distrust however confidently they speak. The bench reads the whole picture as an indictment of the Pharisees just met in chapter nine, strangers to the flock however loudly they claimed authority over the man born blind.

John 10:6

John calls this a parable, though the word is paroimia, a proverb or figure, rather than the Synoptic parabole, and notes plainly that they understood not what things they were which he spake unto them. The same failure to hear that closed chapter eight, ye cannot hear my word, continues here in a new form, confusion at a figure of speech rather than outright rejection of a plain claim. Jesus responds by explaining the figure himself in two stages, first as the door and then as the shepherd, rather than leaving it in riddle form.

John 10:7-8

I am the door of the sheep is the third of the seven predicated I AM sayings, and it shifts the figure from the shepherd who enters by the door to the door itself, Jesus now the very access point rather than merely the one who uses it rightly. All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers is not a blanket verdict on every prophet of Israel, whom Jesus elsewhere honors, but a description of the false messiahs and self-appointed leaders the phrase's context supplies. The bench reads the sheep did not hear them as the flock's own instinct proving the claimants false, the same discernment already pictured in verses four and five.

John 10:9-10

By me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture describes both safety and freedom, the sheepfold's protection at night and the open pasture by day, salvation pictured as abundant provision rather than mere confinement. The thief cometh not, but for to steal, and to kill, and to destroy sets the false shepherd's aim starkly against Jesus's own, I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly. The bench reads more abundantly, perissos, as life overflowing its ordinary measure, the same fullness John's purpose statement at 20:31 promises to everyone who believes.

John 10:11-13

I am the good shepherd, the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep is the fourth I AM saying, kalos rather than merely agathos, a shepherd good in the sense of noble and admirable, not only morally upright. The hireling, whose own the sheep are not, flees when the wolf comes, careth not for the sheep, exactly the charge already leveled at the Pharisees who abandoned the healed man in chapter nine rather than rejoice with him. The contrast is ownership against employment, ownership alone producing the willingness to die that no wage could ever purchase.

John 10:14-15

I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine restates the fourth I AM saying and grounds the mutual knowledge between shepherd and flock in something higher still. As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father sets the shepherd's knowledge of his sheep on the same footing as the Father's knowledge of the Son, an intimacy within the Godhead extended outward to the flock. And I lay down my life for the sheep repeats the promise of verse eleven now anchored in that same Trinitarian knowledge, the cross an act of the same love that binds Father and Son.

John 10:16

Other sheep I have, which are not of this fold points beyond Israel to the Gentile flock still to be gathered, a promise the book of Acts will show fulfilled at Cornelius's household and beyond. Them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice extends the same intimate hearing already described of the Jewish sheep to this wider flock, no lesser relationship for coming later. One fold, one shepherd corrects a common mistranslation carried by some older English versions as one fold, for the Greek gives two different words, poimne for the single flock and aule for the earlier sheepfold, unity of flock rather than uniformity of enclosure.

John 10:17-18

Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again ties the cross to the resurrection as a single act rather than two separate events, death always in view of the life beyond it. No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself claims a sovereignty over his own death that no victim of Rome's cross ever possessed, and I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again states the same authority over resurrection, the fifth I AM saying, I am the resurrection and the life, already implicit here before it is spoken outright at Lazarus's tomb. This commandment have I received of my Father grounds even this sovereign power in obedience, the Son's freedom and his submission never set against each other in this Gospel.

John 10:19-21

There was a division therefore again among the Jews repeats the split already noted at 7:43 and 9:16, the same discourse producing opposite verdicts in different hearers rather than uniform rejection. He hath a devil, and is mad, why hear ye him revives the charge Jesus had to answer directly in chapter eight, while others object on the plainest evidential ground available, can a devil open the eyes of the blind, the healed man of chapter nine standing as a living answer to the accusation. The bench notes the argument is exactly the kind John's Gospel keeps building, works offered as testimony a fair hearer cannot honestly dismiss.

John 10:22-23

The feast of the dedication, and it was winter names Hanukkah, instituted by Judas Maccabeus in 164 BC to commemorate the temple's cleansing and rededication after Antiochus Epiphanes had defiled it, a feast with no basis in the Torah itself but kept faithfully by Jesus all the same. The note it was winter is not incidental detail but explains the setting of the next scene, Jesus walked in Solomon's porch, a covered colonnade along the temple's east side offering shelter from the cold. The bench reads the feast's own theme, the temple purified and rededicated to God, as a fitting backdrop for the identity claims about to follow.

John 10:24

How long dost thou make us to doubt sounds like a fair request for clarity, but the bench reads it as impatience covering unbelief rather than honest inquiry, since Jesus has already answered the substance of the question repeatedly. If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly asks for the very word Messiah spoken outright, a title Jesus has been careful to let his works and his I AM sayings carry rather than announcing publicly, mindful of the political uprising a bare messianic claim could ignite. The demand sets up the answer that follows, which gives them plainness of evidence even while withholding the bare political title they were fishing for.

John 10:25-26

I told you, and ye believed not answers their demand for plainness by pointing out he has already told them, through the shepherd discourse and every prior sign. The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me repeats the witness structure of chapter five and eight, evidence offered rather than assertion alone. But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep names the real obstacle, not insufficient evidence but a will that has already refused the flock's own instinctive hearing described earlier in the chapter.

John 10:27-29

My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me gathers the whole chapter's shepherd imagery into three marks of the true flock, hearing, being known, and following. I give unto them eternal life, and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand is the anchor text behind eternal security across church history, and the bench notes both the strength of the promise and the range of readings it has provoked among Bible-believing Christians who differ on whether the warning passages elsewhere qualify it. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all doubles the security in a second hand, no man able to pluck them out of my Father's hand either, the sheep held in both hands at once.

John 10:30

I and my Father are one is among the plainest claims to deity in the Gospel, the Greek hen a neuter one rather than masculine, oneness of essence and will rather than a claim to be the same person as the Father. The bench reads it against verse twenty-nine's just-stated unity of the Father's hand and the Son's hand, the sheep's security resting on a oneness between Father and Son too complete for anything to slip through either grip. The next verse shows exactly how the hearers took the claim, not as pious devotion but as a bid for equality with God.

John 10:31-32

Then the Jews took up stones again to stone him repeats the reaction of 8:59, the second attempted stoning John records, and confirms the hearers understood I and my Father are one as a claim to deity rather than mere agreement of purpose. Jesus answers with a question that presses them to say which specific good work has earned this, many good works have I shewed you from my Father, for which of those works do ye stone me, the works themselves standing as unanswered evidence even as the stones are raised. The bench reads the question as exposing that it is not any deed but the claim behind the deeds that has provoked them.

John 10:33

For a good work we stone thee not, but for blasphemy answers Jesus's question directly and removes any doubt about what they understood him to claim. Because that thou, being a man, makest thyself God states their charge in the plainest terms the chapter offers, a human being claiming deity, exactly the reading the bench has given to I and my Father are one and to the I AM sayings running through the whole Gospel. The verse stands as the clearest outside confirmation in John that Jesus's own hearers, however hostile, took his claims as a direct claim to be God.

John 10:34-36

Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods quotes Psalm 82:6, where human judges are called elohim because they bear delegated divine authority to judge, and Jesus argues from the lesser case to the greater. If he called them gods, unto whom the word of God came reasons that if Scripture itself, which cannot be broken, applies so exalted a term to mere judges holding a derived office, the charge of blasphemy cannot rightly fall on one whom the Father hath sanctified, and sent into the world to say I am the Son of God. The bench reads this as an argument from the lesser to the greater rather than a claim that Jesus is only a god in the sense the judges were, since everything else in the passage, the works, the oneness with the Father, and the hostile reaction, argues for a claim far beyond a delegated title.

John 10:37-38

If I do not the works of my Father, believe me not sets a fair test, refusing to ask for faith apart from evidence. But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works asks at minimum that the works themselves be reckoned with even where trust in his person still falls short, a lower bar offered to hearts not yet ready for the higher one. That ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him restates the mutual indwelling that lies behind I and my Father are one, the goal of the whole discourse being recognition of that union.

John 10:39-40

Therefore they sought again to take him, but he escaped out of their hand closes the confrontation the same way chapter eight closed, danger met and passed because his hour has still not come. He went away again beyond Jordan into the place where John at first baptized names Bethany beyond Jordan of 1:28, a deliberate return to the site of his own baptism and the Baptist's early testimony, bracketing his public ministry with that same location. There he abode marks a pause in the narrative before the final trip to Lazarus's tomb and on to Jerusalem for the last time.

John 10:41-42

John did no miracle, but all things that John spake of this man were true offers the Baptist's own ministry a quiet vindication after his death, his greatness never resting on signs but on the truth of his testimony to Jesus. The people at this Bethany, remembering the Baptist's witness firsthand, prove more receptive soil than the hostile crowd just left behind in Jerusalem, and many believed on him there closes the chapter on that gathering harvest. The bench reads the contrast deliberately placed, unbelief at the temple beside faith at the Jordan, as John's own comment on where the true sheep are actually found.
