Acts 20:1-3

After the uproar was ceased, the Ephesian riot of the previous chapter behind him, Paul called the disciples together, embraced them, and set out for Macedonia. Luke’s summary compresses months of ministry that Paul’s own letters fill in, since 2 Corinthians was very likely written from Macedonia in this stretch and Romans from the three months in Greece that follow. The plot by the Jews as he was about to sail into Syria forced a change of route back through Macedonia, the same pattern of hostility that had trailed Paul from city to city.

Acts 20:4

There accompanied him into Asia Sopater of Berea, Aristarchus and Secundus of Thessalonica, Gaius of Derbe, Timotheus, and Tychicus and Trophimus of Asia, a delegation drawn from the very churches that had given toward the collection for Jerusalem’s poor. The bench reads the list as the visible fruit of the Gentile mission Paul describes in Romans fifteen, representatives from Macedonia, Galatia, and Asia traveling together as living proof of one church across many nations. Their number also guarded the collection itself, since more than one pair of hands watched money that could otherwise draw suspicion of private gain.

Acts 20:5-6

These going before tarried for us at Troas: the pronoun shifts back to we, and Luke rejoins the company he had left at Philippi in chapter sixteen, the second of the we-passages resuming after a gap of some years. They sailed from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread and came to Troas in five days, a slow crossing against the spring winds, and stayed seven days, long enough for the church there to gather on the Lord’s day before Paul’s ship sailed on. Ramsay reads the resumed pronoun as Luke’s own signature of presence, the eyewitness claim carried in grammar rather than asserted outright.

Acts 20:7-8

break bread: Upon the first day of the week the disciples came together to break bread, Luke’s plain evidence that the church had already moved its gathering to the Lord’s day, the day of the resurrection, rather than the Jewish sabbath. Paul preached at length because he was to depart on the morrow, continuing his speech until midnight, and the many lights in the upper chamber are named both for the practical detail of a night meeting and as an answer to the later charge that Christians met in secret darkness. Chrysostom preached from this scene on the danger of drowsiness in worship, aimed less at Eutychus than at his own congregation.

Acts 20:9

Eutychus, a certain young man, sat in the window and sunk down with sleep as Paul’s sermon ran long, and fell from the third loft to be taken up dead. The physician Luke states the fact plainly, dead, not merely stunned, a detail Barnes and others weigh against the modern guess that he only fainted. The window seat and the crowded, lamp-heated upper room explain the drowsiness without excusing the tragedy, and the plain narrative is left to carry its own weight.

Acts 20:10-12

Paul went down and fell on him, embracing him as Elijah and Elisha had done over the children they raised, and said, Trouble not yourselves, for his life is in him. The bench reads Paul’s word as report rather than riddle, life restored, not merely never lost, since the young man is brought up alive in verse twelve and the church takes no little comfort. Paul then went back up, broke bread, ate, and talked until daybreak before departing, an evening that held a sermon, a death, a restoration, and a meal within a few hours.

Acts 20:13-14

The company went ahead by ship to Assos while Paul went by land alone, on foot across the neck of land between Troas and Assos, a route that saved little time and cost him solitude, which Ramsay reads as deliberate, a last quiet stretch before the harder legs of the voyage still ahead. At Assos he came aboard and they sailed on to Mitylene, Luke’s itinerary precise enough that its stops can still be traced on a map of the Aegean coast. The plain, day by day and port by port style of these verses is itself part of the evidence historians of the ancient world have weighed for the book’s eyewitness character.

Acts 20:15-16

Island by island, over against Chios, then Samos, Trogyllium, and Miletus, the ship made its way down the coast, and Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus rather than land there, unwilling to spend the time in Asia that a stop in his own beloved church would surely cost. He hasted, if it were possible, to be at Jerusalem for the day of Pentecost, the feast that had opened this book’s story and now draws its central figure back toward the city where his own sufferings wait. The choice cost him a face to face farewell with the Ephesian elders, so he sends for them instead, which opens the next scene.

Acts 20:17

From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church, presbuteroi, the term Acts uses interchangeably with overseers in the address that follows at verse twenty eight, evidence the commentators read as the earliest church using one office under two names, elder by age and dignity, overseer by function. The thirty mile trip each way cost the elders real effort, a measure of what this farewell meant to them and to him. What follows is the only speech in Acts addressed to believers rather than to outsiders, and the only one to a group Paul himself had founded and led for three years.

Acts 20:18-19

from the first day: Ye know, from the first day that I came into Asia, after what manner I have been with you: Paul opens by appealing to their own witness of his life among them, not to claims they could not check. He served the Lord with all humility of mind, with many tears, and amid trials that came from the lying in wait of the Jews, three years condensed into a single sentence of tears and opposition. The bench notes that Paul never asks them to take his doctrine on trust without also pointing to the life that had carried it.

Acts 20:20-21

How I kept back nothing that was profitable unto you: Paul’s ministry held nothing back for fear of offense, teaching publicly and from house to house alike, the pulpit and the kitchen table both counted pastoral ground. His whole message reduces to two turns, repentance toward God and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ, the same double motion John the Baptist and Jesus himself preached, now Paul’s summary of three years of teaching to Jew and Greek alike. Gill reads the phrase from house to house as evidence against limiting pastoral care to the pulpit only, a private as well as a public office.

Acts 20:22-24

And now, behold, I go bound in the spirit unto Jerusalem, not knowing the things that shall befall me there: Paul’s compulsion is inward, the Spirit’s own constraint, even while the Spirit also witnesses in city after city that bonds and afflictions abide him, a foreknowledge without a forbidding, since Paul goes anyway. None of these things move me, he says, nor does he count his life dear to himself, so that he might finish his course with joy and complete the ministry received of the Lord Jesus. The bench hears in this verse the same spirit that will answer the disciples at Caesarea in chapter twenty one, warned yet unmoved, obedience without illusion about the cost.

Acts 20:25

And now, behold, I know that ye all shall see my face no more: Paul states his own expectation plainly, though the pastoral epistles suggest he did revisit Asia after his first Roman imprisonment, a tension the commentators resolve by reading Paul’s word as his own settled expectation at this hour rather than an infallible prediction binding on the outcome. What he had gone preaching among them was the kingdom of God, the same subject that opens and closes this book. The farewell’s weight falls less on certainty about the future than on the finality Paul feels in his own heart as he speaks.

Acts 20:26-27

Wherefore I take you to record this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men: Paul borrows the watchman’s language of Ezekiel thirty three, where a sentinel who gives faithful warning is cleared of the blood of those who perish having heard it. His ground for the claim comes in the next breath, for I have not shunned to declare unto you all the counsel of God, the whole message, comfortable and hard alike, kept back for no one’s convenience. The bench reads the pairing as Paul’s own account of what faithful ministry requires, full disclosure, not selective comfort.

Acts 20:28

Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood: the verse names the office three ways, flock to shepherd, overseers appointed by the Spirit, and a church bought at the highest possible price. Some early manuscripts read church of the Lord rather than church of God, and commentators who favor the received text weigh it as among the strongest single statements of Christ’s deity in the New Testament, since it is God’s own blood that purchased the flock. Either reading keeps the same force, that the shepherds under-shepherd a church that cost their Master everything, and self-watchfulness comes first, before watching the flock.

Acts 20:29-30

For I know this, that after my departing shall grievous wolves enter in among you, not sparing the flock: Paul foresees external false teachers pressing in once his own guarding presence is removed. Also of your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things to draw away disciples after them, a second and sadder danger from inside the eldership itself, ambition dressed as doctrine. The bench notes this warning fulfilled within a generation, since the letter to Ephesus and the seven letters of Revelation both name trouble already at work in this very church.

Acts 20:31

Therefore watch, and remember that by the space of three years I ceased not to warn every one night and day with tears: Paul sets his own labor as the standard against which their future watchfulness is measured, a pastoral ministry that reached every single soul, not the congregation in general. The three years matches Paul’s own account of an extended Ephesian ministry, the longest settled stay of his recorded missionary work. Tears mark his preaching here as they marked verse nineteen, the same mixture of tenderness and urgency running through the whole farewell.

Acts 20:32

And now, brethren, I commend you to God, and to the word of his grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an inheritance among all them which are sanctified: having warned them of wolves within and without, Paul now hands the church to a keeper stronger than himself. The word of his grace, not Paul’s own continued presence, is named as what will build them up, Scripture and gospel doing the pastoral work he can no longer do in person. Calvin reads the verse as Paul’s own confession that the church’s security rests in God’s word, never in any minister’s irreplaceability.

Acts 20:33-35

I have coveted no man’s silver, or gold, or apparel: Paul appeals once more to their own knowledge, now of his financial integrity, since these hands, his own tentmaker’s hands, ministered to his necessities and to those who traveled with him. So laboring, he taught them to support the weak, and he closes with a saying of the Lord Jesus found in none of the four gospels, it is more blessed to give than to receive. Scholars call such a saying an agraphon, a word of Jesus preserved by living memory rather than by any gospel writer, and the bench treats Paul’s citation of it here as reliable apostolic testimony.

Acts 20:36-38

When he had thus spoken, he kneeled down, and prayed with them all, closing the longest sustained scene of prayer together with a congregation recorded of Paul in this book. They wept sore and fell on Paul’s neck and kissed him, sorrowing most of all for the word that they should see his face no more, the grief tied directly back to verse twenty five. They accompanied him unto the ship, the final act of a farewell the bench across the centuries has read as one of the most tender scenes in the whole of Scripture.
