1 Corinthians 15:1-2

Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand: the resurrection chapter opens by returning to first things, gnorizo, making known again a gospel Corinth had already received and already stood on, since the denial some among them voiced in verse 12 struck at ground they themselves had built their faith upon. Verse 2 adds the condition that has troubled readers since the early church, saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached, unless ye have believed in vain, language the bench reads as testing the reality of a profession rather than threatening a genuine believer's security, a true and lasting faith being one that holds fast to what it first received. The whole chapter that follows is offered as the content of that gospel restated and defended point by point.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4

For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; and that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures: Paul names his gospel a received tradition, paredoka and parelabon, formal terms for handing on a fixed deposit, dating the core creed to within a few years of the crucifixion itself rather than to a later legend. According to the scriptures stands twice, tying both the death and the resurrection to the Old Testament's own witness, Isaiah 53 and Psalm 16 among the texts the earliest church read this way. The bench calls these two verses the oldest and most tightly worded gospel summary in the New Testament, four clauses covering death, burial, resurrection, and scriptural fulfillment in a single breath.

1 Corinthians 15:5-7

And that he was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve: the witness list begins with Peter by his Aramaic name, the same man whose denial the gospels record without flattery, now named first among the risen Christ's witnesses. Verse 6 adds the boldest evidentiary claim in the chapter, seen of above five hundred brethren at once, of whom the greater part remain unto this present, an open invitation for any Corinthian doubting the resurrection to go and ask a living eyewitness himself. Verse 7 closes the list with James, the Lord's own brother who did not believe in him before the crucifixion according to the gospels, and then all the apostles, the resurrection turning a skeptical brother into a pillar of the Jerusalem church.

1 Corinthians 15:8-10

And last of all he was seen of me also, as of one born out of due time: Paul places himself at the list's end, ektroma, a word for a premature or violently delivered birth, his own conversion as sudden and unlooked for as the image suggests. Verse 9 gives the reason for the harsh self-description, the least of the apostles, not meet to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God, the same man who once dragged believers to prison now numbering himself among the risen Lord's witnesses only by grace. Verse 10 states the doctrine the whole autobiography serves, by the grace of God I am what I am, his labor beyond the other apostles credited immediately to the grace that worked in him rather than to himself, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me.

1 Corinthians 15:11

Therefore whether it were I or they, so we preach, and so ye believed: the autobiography closes by erasing any distance between Paul's gospel and the other apostles' gospel, one message preached by many mouths and received by the Corinthians themselves before any of the chapter's argument began. The verse functions as the hinge into verse 12, since the resurrection Paul is about to defend is not his private teaching but the faith the whole church already confessed together. The bench notes the verse leaves the deniers in Corinth nowhere to stand, since they had themselves believed the very gospel their present denial contradicts.

1 Corinthians 15:12-14

Now if Christ be preached that he rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? the specific denial surfaces at last, some Corinthians apparently accepted Christ's own resurrection while denying a future bodily resurrection for believers generally, a split position Greek philosophy's discomfort with matter made attractive. Paul answers by refusing to let the two be separated, verse 13, if there be no resurrection of the dead, then is Christ not risen, the general and the particular standing or falling together by the same logic. Verse 14 draws out the stakes before the argument goes any further, if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain, the entire edifice of Christian proclamation and belief resting on one historical claim.

1 Corinthians 15:15-17

Yea, and we are found false witnesses of God; because we have testified of God that he raised up Christ: whom he raised not up, if so be that the dead rise not: Paul follows the hypothesis one step further, if the resurrection is false then the apostles are not merely mistaken but guilty of testifying falsely about God himself, a charge no sincere error could carry. Verse 16 repeats verse 13's logic once more for emphasis, and verse 17 states the cost to the Corinthians themselves, if Christ be not raised, your faith is vain, ye are yet in your sins, the resurrection shown to be the very ground of the forgiveness Corinth had believed it already possessed. The bench notes the deniers had likely not thought their position through to this point, content to keep the atonement while discarding the resurrection that vindicates it.

1 Corinthians 15:18-19

Then they also which are fallen asleep in Christ are perished: the hypothesis reaches its darkest consequence, believers who had already died trusting Christ simply gone if there is no resurrection, their hope extinguished rather than fulfilled. Verse 19 pronounces the verdict on present faith as well, if in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable, since a faith that costs suffering now and delivers nothing beyond the grave would be the worst possible investment rather than a comfort. The bench reads the two verses as Paul's answer to any suggestion that Christianity would remain valuable as ethics or philosophy even without a bodily resurrection, since Paul himself will not accept the comfort without the fact.

1 Corinthians 15:20

But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept: the chapter's turn from hypothesis to fact arrives in four words, but now, nyni de, and the darkness of the previous verses is answered at a stroke. Firstfruits, aparche, names Christ's resurrection as the harvest's first sheaf, guaranteeing by its very nature that the rest of the crop will follow, not a private exception but the pattern's opening installment. The bench ties the image directly to the Levitical firstfruits offering, the first portion consecrated as a pledge of the whole harvest to come, applied here to the general resurrection Paul is about to describe.

1 Corinthians 15:21-22

For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead: the argument widens from Christ's own resurrection to the Adam-Christ pattern the letter has already used, one man's act determining the fate of the race that follows him, whether toward death or toward life. Verse 22 states the pattern by name, as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive, the same structure Romans 5 develops at length, humanity's federal head reversed by a second and greater head. The bench notes the parallel is exact in structure and asymmetrical in scope, Adam's death reaching every descendant by nature, Christ's life reaching every believer by union with him.

1 Corinthians 15:23-24

But every man in his own order: Christ the firstfruits; afterward they that are Christ's at his coming: the resurrection Paul has been defending unfolds in a sequence rather than a single moment, Christ's own resurrection already accomplished, believers raised at his coming, parousia, the word the New Testament uses for the Lord's return. Verse 24 names a further stage after that, then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father, when he shall have put down all rule and all authority and power, a final subjugation of every hostile power preceding the handing over. The bench reads the ordering as evidence against collapsing the resurrection into one undifferentiated event, the text itself naming stages the church has debated in detail ever since.

1 Corinthians 15:25-26

For he must reign, till he hath put all enemies under his feet: Paul cites Psalm 110:1's enthronement language, the reigning Christ's rule extending until every hostile power is subdued beneath him, dei, must, naming the reign as a divine necessity rather than a possibility. Verse 26 names the last enemy by itself, the last enemy that shall be destroyed is death, the very subject the whole chapter has been defending given its final and most personal name. The bench notes the verse answers Corinth's philosophical discomfort with bodily resurrection directly, since a gospel that left death undefeated would have left its worst enemy standing.

1 Corinthians 15:27-28

For he hath put all things under his feet. But when he saith all things are put under him, it is manifest that he is excepted, which did put all things under him: Paul cites Psalm 8:6 and immediately guards it against misreading, the Father who subjects all things to the Son is not himself among the things subjected. Verse 28 completes the sequence begun at verse 24, when all things shall be subdued unto him, then shall the Son also himself be subject unto him that put all things under him, that God may be all in all, the incarnate Son's own submission to the Father the goal toward which the whole triumph moves. The bench reads the submission as functional and mediatorial rather than a statement about the Son's eternal deity, the same Son who is one God with the Father completing his mediatorial work by handing its fruit back to the Father who sent him.

1 Corinthians 15:29

Else what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all? why are they then baptized for the dead? the verse is one of the New Testament's genuinely dark sayings, and the church has named several readings without settling on one, proxy baptism undergone on behalf of believers who died unbaptized, a reading later movements took up from this text; baptism sought for the sake of, huper, the dying testimony of believers already martyred; baptism received over the graves of the dead in hope of the resurrection; and a metaphorical baptism of suffering that led some converts toward death for the faith. The bench holds these readings open rather than choosing among them, since the verse itself decides nothing between them, and notes only that Paul's argument does not depend on approving whatever practice stands behind the phrase, only on showing that even the Corinthians' own custom assumed the future resurrection some among them were now denying.

1 Corinthians 15:30-32

And why stand we in jeopardy every hour? Paul turns from a debated Corinthian custom to his own daily experience, I die daily, kath hemeran apothnesko, apostolic ministry lived under constant threat of death that only a certain future resurrection could justify enduring. Verse 32 names a specific danger, fought with beasts at Ephesus, read by most of the bench as a figure for violent human opposition rather than the arena itself, since Roman citizenship would ordinarily have shielded Paul from that penalty, though some hold it literal. The verse's conclusion states the alternative starkly, if the dead rise not, let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die, quoting Isaiah 22:13's own words for a doomed city, the logical end of Corinth's denial laid bare as despair dressed as philosophy.

1 Corinthians 15:33-34

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners: Paul quotes a line from the Greek poet Menander's comedy Thais, homiliai kakai, bad company or bad conversation, corrupting good character, a secular proverb pressed into service against the deniers whose company was spreading doubt through the congregation. Verse 34 turns the quotation into a direct command, awake to righteousness, and sin not, the moral consequence of denying the resurrection named plainly rather than left as an abstract debate. Some have not the knowledge of God, Paul adds, I speak this to your shame, the denial diagnosed finally as ignorance of God himself rather than superior learning.

1 Corinthians 15:35-38

But some man will say, How are the dead raised up, and with what body do they come: Paul voices the objection Corinth's Greek assumptions would have raised against a bodily resurrection, imagining the question as a real interlocutor's challenge before answering it at length. Thou fool, he answers, that which thou sowest is not quickened, except it die, the analogy drawn from ordinary agriculture, a seed's death in the ground the necessary condition of the plant it becomes, not its contradiction. Verses 37 and 38 press the same figure further, the sown grain bears no resemblance to the grown plant, bare grain of wheat or another kind, yet God gives it a body as it hath pleased him, and to every seed his own body, continuity of identity across a total change of form answering the how and what body of the objection at once.

1 Corinthians 15:39-41

All flesh is not the same flesh: but there is one kind of flesh of men, another flesh of beasts, another of fishes, and another of birds: Paul multiplies examples from creation itself to break the assumption that one body must resemble another to share real continuity, since ordinary flesh already comes in kinds suited to their different creatures. Verse 40 adds celestial and terrestrial bodies, the glory of each different from the other, and verse 41 pushes the point into the sky itself, one glory of the sun, another of the moon, another of the stars, one star differing from another star in glory. The bench reads the whole catalogue as preparing the reader for the sharpest contrast yet, the natural body and the spiritual body of verse 44, glory rather than resemblance the measure of continuity between them.

1 Corinthians 15:42-44

So also is the resurrection of the dead. It is sown in corruption; it is raised in incorruption: four contrasts across three verses apply the seed's death and growth directly to the body laid in a grave, corruption against incorruption, dishonour against glory, weakness against power, natural against spiritual, each pair naming what the grave receives and what the resurrection returns. Sown, speiretai, is Paul's own word for burial throughout the passage, keeping the agricultural figure alive at every step rather than switching images midstream. Verse 44 names the final contrast, a natural body, psychikon, and a spiritual body, pneumatikon, not two substances at war but one body transformed by the same power that raised Christ from the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:45-46

And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit: Paul cites Genesis 2:7 directly, keep-hard across the citation ledger, and sets the first Adam's created life beside the last Adam's life-giving power, Christ not merely restored to life but able to impart resurrection life to others. Verse 46 states the order the whole chapter has followed, that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural, and afterward that which is spiritual, natural life preceding spiritual glory in both individual growth and the history of redemption. The bench reads the title last Adam as Paul's own naming of Christ as humanity's second and final representative head, closing the argument begun at verse 21, by man came death.

1 Corinthians 15:47-49

The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven: the contrast names each Adam's origin, dust for the first, heaven for the second, and Paul draws the practical consequence in verse 48, as is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy, and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly, every human being bearing one image or the other by which head he belongs to. Verse 49 turns the doctrine into a promise, as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly, a future tense the bench reads as the resurrection body itself, not merely a present spiritual likeness to Christ. The whole unit answers the Corinthian question of verse 35 with a name rather than a mechanism, the resurrection body will bear Christ's own heavenly image.

1 Corinthians 15:50

Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption: the verse states plainly what the whole seed and body argument has been building toward, ordinary mortal existence as it now stands cannot enter the coming kingdom unchanged, not because the body is evil but because it is perishable. The bench notes flesh and blood is a common Jewish idiom for mortal humanity rather than a rejection of physical bodies altogether, the very next verses describing a change rather than a discarding. The mystery Paul is about to reveal answers the practical question the chapter has been building toward, what happens to those still alive when the resurrection comes.

1 Corinthians 15:51-52

Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed: Paul discloses something the Old Testament had not stated, that believers still living at Christ's coming will be transformed without first passing through death. Verse 52 sets the timing in the smallest unit language allows, in a moment, en atomo, the indivisible instant the Greek word gives its name to, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump, the dead raised incorruptible and the living changed in the same event. This verse anchors the church's hope of being gathered to the Lord at his coming, and the timing of that gathering relative to a coming time of tribulation remains genuinely disputed among faithful readers, pre-tribulation, mid-tribulation, and post-tribulation positions all finding real support in this and related texts, George Eldon Ladd's post-tribulation reading and John Nelson Darby's pre-tribulation reading among the historic poles the church has argued between without the text itself settling the question.

1 Corinthians 15:53

For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality: the necessity named here, dei, echoes the same word used of Christ's own reign in verse 25, the change from mortal to immortal not a possibility but a requirement built into the resurrection itself. Put on, endysasthai, is clothing language, the same verb Paul uses elsewhere for putting on Christ, describing the resurrection body as worn over what remains rather than a wholly different self replacing the old one. The bench reads the verse as the last statement of continuity before the chapter turns to the victory shout that follows, the same person changed rather than a new person substituted.

1 Corinthians 15:54-55

So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory: Paul cites Isaiah 25:8's promise of death's final undoing, keep-hard across the citation ledger, the future event of verse 53 shown to fulfill a promise centuries old. Verse 55 adds Hosea 13:14's taunt, O death, where is thy sting, O grave, where is thy victory, read by the earliest church as death's own defeat mocked to its face, the Hebrew text's own difficult wording rendered by Paul in the confident key of accomplished victory rather than threatened judgment. The bench notes both Old Testament citations converge on the same resurrection Paul has spent the whole chapter defending, the ancient promises finally named as fulfilled rather than merely awaited.

1 Corinthians 15:56-57

The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law: the victory shout pauses for a compressed doctrinal statement, death's power traced to sin as its cause and the law's power to condemn traced to sin as what it exposes and cannot cure, the same argument Romans 7 develops at length. Verse 57 answers the whole chain in a single ascription, thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ, sin's sting, the law's strength, and death's grip all answered by one gift rather than three separate remedies. The bench reads the two verses as Paul's own explanation of how the resurrection actually defeats death, not merely reversing it but removing the sin that gave death its claim in the first place.

1 Corinthians 15:58

Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord: the chapter's only imperative arrives at its very end, the whole resurrection argument existing to produce this single practical result, a congregation no longer shaken by the denial some among them had raised. Forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord closes both the chapter and the doctrine together, the resurrection's certainty the one guarantee that makes present labor and present suffering worth the cost. The bench reads the verse as the letter's own answer to verse 32's despair, if the dead rise not, let us eat and drink, since the dead do rise, and no labor offered to the Lord is ever wasted.
