Exodus 3:15

in Exodus 3

God also told Moses, “Say to the Israelites, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob—has sent me to you.’ This is My name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered in every generation.

ASV

And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, Jehovah, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

KJV

And God said moreover unto Moses, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, The Lord God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, hath sent me unto you: this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial unto all generations.

Commentary

2 notes on this verse
The Lord God ... - Better, Jehovah יהוה yehovâh, God of your fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac, and God of Jacob. It corresponds exactly to the preceding verse, the words “I am” and “Jehovah” (Yahweh) being equivalent. This name met all the requirements of Moses, involving a two-fold pledge of accomplishment; the pledges of ancient benefits and of a new manifestation. Name ... memorial - The name signifies that by which God makes Himself known, the memorial that by which His people worship Him.

This site's exposition

this is my name for ever, and this is my memorial

The word memorial occurs here for the first time in Scripture and it is applied to the name. The name is tied in the same breath to the God of Abraham, of Isaac and of Jacob, so it arrives attached to a history rather than as a bare title. Exodus 6:3 later says the fathers knew God as God Almighty and that by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them, while Genesis uses the name from 2:4 onward and Abram speaks it at 15:2. The older commentators read known there as known in the character the name declares, and the documentary reading takes the verse as evidence of separate sources.
