5 notes on this verseAnd it cannot reasonably be supposed that both would agree without the son's abominable and incorrigible wickedness, in which case it seems a righteous law, because the crime of rebellion against his own parents did so fully signify what a pernicious member he would be in the commonwealth of Israel, who had dissolved all his natural obligations.

Both household laws take the matter out of the father's hands. The firstborn keeps “a double portion” whatever the father prefers. A stubborn son is brought by both parents to the elders.

The parents could accuse, and only the elders could judge. Wesley reads the need for both parents as a guard against a cruel father. He reads the elders' hearing as a second guard, since they examined the cause before any sentence.
