And the water ran round about the altar,.... There being such a large effusion of it on it; and he filled the trench also with water; which surrounded the altar, so that it seemed impracticable that any fire should kindle upon it; and this gave full proof and demonstration there could be no collusion in this matter.

Four barrels, poured three times, until the wood is soaked, the trench full, and every suspicion of hidden fire drowned. In the third year of drought, water is the costliest thing on the mountain. Elijah spends it like a man removing every explanation but one.

The trench of verse 32 now stands full, and verse 38 records the fire licking up this same water. John Gill notes that the water around the altar made any kindling by human means impossible to believe. Gill calls it proof against collusion.
