Luke 10:1-2

After these things the Lord appointed other seventy also, and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come, a second and wider sending beyond the twelve of the previous chapter, into every place he intended to visit himself. The harvest truly is great, but the labourers are few, he says, and instructs them to pray the Lord of the harvest to send forth labourers, prayer itself made the means by which the mission's own workforce is raised. The bench reads the seventy, some manuscripts giving seventy-two, as answering Israel's seventy elders and the seventy nations of the old table of nations, a sending that already looks toward the wider world Acts will reach.

Luke 10:3-4

Go your ways: behold, I send you forth as lambs among wolves, a plain warning of vulnerability rather than a promise of ease, the mission undertaken without the world's usual protections. Carry neither purse, nor scrip, nor shoes, and salute no man by the way repeats the traveling austerity already given the twelve, with the added urgency of forgoing even the customary lengthy greetings of the road. The bench reads the silence toward strangers on the road as haste rather than rudeness, an errand too pressing for the ordinary courtesies its own culture expected.

Luke 10:5-7

Into whatsoever house ye enter, first say, Peace be to this house, the ordinary Jewish greeting turned into something offered rather than merely spoken, and if the son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon it, if not, it shall turn to you again, the blessing recoiling harmlessly rather than being wasted. In the same house remain, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the labourer is worthy of his hire, a principle Paul will later cite directly on behalf of gospel workers, and go not from house to house forbids seeking better lodging once settled. The bench reads the whole instruction as guarding the messengers from any appearance of greed while still authorizing their support as a right, not a favor.

Luke 10:8-9

Into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you, eat such things as are set before you, a further relaxation of ordinary Jewish table scruples for the sake of the mission, since an uncertain table might otherwise become an obstacle to the message. Heal the sick that are therein, and say unto them, The kingdom of God is come nigh unto you, word and work joined exactly as they were for the twelve, the healing itself a visible proof of the announcement's truth. The bench reads come nigh as the kingdom's own nearness rather than its full arrival, a tension this Gospel keeps until the resurrection.

Luke 10:10-12

But into whatsoever city ye enter, and they receive you not, go your ways out into the streets of the same and say, Even the very dust of your city, which cleaveth on us, we do wipe off against you, a symbolic renouncing of any claim on a town that refuses its own gospel. Notwithstanding be ye sure of this, that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you keeps the announcement standing even over a rejecting town, the offer real whether or not it is received. It shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom than for that city, the bench reading a stark comparison, a town that hears the gospel preached and refuses it stands under a heavier judgment than the very byword for ancient wickedness.

Luke 10:13-15

Woe unto thee, Chorazin, woe unto thee, Bethsaida, for if the mighty works done in you had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they had repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes, the towns that saw the most of his miracles named as bearing the heaviest guilt for refusing him. It shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you presses the same principle already given for any rejecting town, privilege raising the standard by which a place is judged. Thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell, the bench reading his own adopted home city singled out last and hardest, the town most favored with his presence now most exposed by its unbelief.

Luke 10:16

He that heareth you heareth me, and he that despiseth you despiseth me, and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me, a single verse binding the messenger's reception to the Father's own authority through an unbroken chain. The bench reads the saying as the whole mission's warrant, the seventy carrying not their own message but his, and his not merely his own but the Father's who sent him. A town's welcome or refusal of ordinary messengers is therefore never a small matter, since it reaches all the way back to God himself.

Luke 10:17-18

The seventy returned again with joy, saying, Lord, even the devils are subject unto us through thy name, an enthusiasm exceeding what he had actually commissioned, since he sent them to heal and preach the kingdom rather than promising them power over devils outright. He answers, I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven, and the bench divides over whether this names a vision granted in that moment, the primeval fall of Satan seen afresh, or the ongoing collapse of his kingdom now made visible in the seventy's own small victories, positions held without a verdict forced on the text. Either way the image reads as swift and total rather than gradual, a defeat already certain even while the war continues.

Luke 10:19-20

Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you, an authority the bench reads as covering the mission's own dangers rather than promising blanket physical immunity for every believer in every circumstance. Notwithstanding in this rejoice not, that the spirits are subject unto you, but rather rejoice, because your names are written in heaven redirects their joy from the spectacular sign to the settled fact behind it. The bench reads the correction as protecting the seventy from resting their assurance on gifts that can be imitated or lost, when a name written in heaven cannot be taken from them by any failure in the field.

Luke 10:21-22

In that hour Jesus rejoiced in spirit, and said, I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes, a rare direct notice of the Lord's own emotion, joy rising from the same mission report that has just corrected the seventy's joy. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in thy sight submits the whole pattern, wisdom passed over and simplicity favored, to the Father's own good pleasure rather than treating it as an accident. All things are delivered to me of my Father, and no man knoweth who the Son is, but the Father, and who the Father is, but the Son, and he to whom the Son will reveal him, a claim of mutual, exclusive knowledge between Father and Son that the bench reads as among the highest statements of his own deity in this Gospel.

Luke 10:23-24

He turned him unto his disciples, and said privately, Blessed are the eyes which see the things that ye see, a beatitude spoken to the ordinary men who have just watched the seventy return and heard the Father's own praise of babes over the wise. Many prophets and kings have desired to see those things which ye see, and have not seen them, and to hear those things which ye hear, and have not heard them, the bench naming this the privilege of standing at the hinge of redemptive history, a vantage even the greatest men of the old covenant were not given. The saying closes the whole scene with its true weight, ordinary disciples granted what patriarchs and prophets only longed for.

Luke 10:25-28

A certain lawyer stood up, and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life, the question framed as a test rather than an honest inquiry, a scholar of the law probing a teacher without formal credentials. Jesus answers his question with a question, What is written in the law, how readest thou, turning the expert back to his own text, and the lawyer answers rightly, the Shema's love of God with heart, soul, strength, and mind joined to Leviticus's love of neighbour as oneself. Thou hast answered right, this do, and thou shalt live holds him to his own correct answer, the bench reading the reply as exposing that knowing the law rightly and keeping it are two very different achievements.

Luke 10:29

But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour, the lawyer's follow-up revealing the test's real purpose, narrowing the command's reach rather than obeying it. The bench reads the question itself as already a form of self-defense, a man who suspects he has not kept the command seeking a definition small enough that he has already met it. The parable that follows answers a different question than the one he asked, not who qualifies as my neighbour but what it looks like to be one.

Luke 10:30-32

A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead, the notoriously dangerous descent through desert terrain the parable's realistic setting rather than an invented backdrop. By chance there came down a certain priest that way, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side, and likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side, two men whose office bound them to God's own law now failing that law's own summary just quoted. The bench notes the ceremonial excuse available to both, corpse defilement barred a priest from temple service, without endorsing it as sufficient, since the man was only half dead and mercy was never actually weighed against duty.

Luke 10:33-35

But a certain Samaritan, as he traveled, came where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, the word splanchnizomai again, the same deep mercy verb given the widow of Nain, now placed with the one figure the lawyer's own culture despised. He went to him, bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, set him on his own beast, brought him to an inn, and took care of him, hands-on mercy that costs the Samaritan his own comfort and his own animal. On the morrow he took out two pence, gave them to the host, and promised to repay whatsoever more was spent, the bench reading the ongoing provision as proof the mercy was not a single dramatic gesture but a sustained commitment to the man's full recovery.

Luke 10:36-37

Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves, Jesus asks, the question quietly reversing the lawyer's own, no longer who qualifies for mercy but who acted as a true neighbour by showing it. He that shewed mercy on him, the lawyer answers, unable even to name the word Samaritan aloud, and Jesus closes with the same charge once given at the end of the two debtors, Go, and do thou likewise. The bench reads the whole parable as refusing the lawyer's attempt to draw a boundary around love, since the story hands him not a definition but a command.

Luke 10:38-39

As they went, he entered into a certain village, and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house, the same Bethany family this Gospel and John's both return to, hospitality opening the scene before any word is spoken. She had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word, the posture of a disciple rather than merely a hostess, a place normally reserved at that time for men learning from a rabbi. The bench notes the household's ordinary domestic roles about to be quietly overturned by whose choice Jesus will actually commend.

Luke 10:40-42

But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone, bid her therefore that she help me, her complaint aimed past Mary at Jesus himself, as though his teaching were the cause of her own overwork. Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things, he answers, the doubled name the same tender address he gives Simon Peter elsewhere, correction wrapped in evident affection rather than rebuke alone. But one thing is needful, and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her, the bench reading the contrast not as work against rest but as anxious many-sidedness against a single, better-chosen priority, hearing him while he is present to be heard.
