Jeremiah 9:1-3

Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears: Oh that my head were waters, and mine eyes a fountain of tears opens the chapter with the prophet's own extremity, a wish for tear ducts equal to the grief coming rather than the theme of some other speaker's oracle. Oh that I had in the wilderness a lodging place of wayfaring men states the same wish from its other side, escape rather than more weeping, and the bench reads both together as the honest limit of a man told repeatedly not to intercede yet unable to stop grieving. The charge that follows, they bend their tongues like their bow for lies, but they are not valiant for the truth, names the specific sin driving the tears, deceit chosen over courage.

Jeremiah 9:4-6

Take ye heed every one of his neighbour: Take ye heed every one of his neighbour, and trust ye not in any brother describes a society where deceit has reached the family itself, every brother will utterly supplant, the verb echoing Jacob's own name given at Genesis 27:36 for the one who supplanted Esau. They have taught their tongue to speak lies pictures deceit as a learned skill practiced until fluent rather than an occasional lapse. Thine habitation is in the midst of deceit closes the unit with the plainest possible charge, deceit is not something Judah does but the place Judah lives.

Jeremiah 9:7-9

I will melt them, and try them: I will melt them, and try them answers the deceit of the previous verses with the metalworker's own remedy, ore heated until what it is made of can no longer hide. The question asked in the text, how shall I do for the daughter of my people, is genuine rather than rhetorical, the Lord's own reluctance stated alongside the coming judgment. Their tongue is as an arrow shot out returns to the chapter's opening charge of deceitful speech, and the demand for vengeance on such a nation closes the unit on the same note struck at 5:9 and 5:29 nearly word for word.

Jeremiah 9:10-11

For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing: For the mountains will I take up a weeping and wailing turns the coming devastation into a funeral for the land itself, the burned habitations of the wilderness left without the voice of cattle, fowl or beast, life stripped from the terrain before the people are named at all. I will make Jerusalem heaps, and a den of dragons pictures the capital reduced to ruins fit only for jackals, the city built for worship now home to the wild. The bench reads the order deliberately, land mourned before city, the whole created order caught up in judgment on the people it was given to feed.

Jeremiah 9:12-14

Who is the wise man, that may understand this?: Who is the wise man, that may understand this? poses the question the whole book keeps circling, wisdom tested against whether it can read the moment rather than merely quote the law, echoing 8:8-9's false scribes. The Lord's own answer follows at verse 13, because they have forsaken my law which I set before them, and have not obeyed my voice, the cause named plainly rather than left to speculation. Walked after the imagination of their own heart, and after Baalim, which their fathers taught them ties the present generation's idolatry to inherited practice, sin passed down rather than invented fresh.

Jeremiah 9:15-16

I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood: Behold, I will feed them, even this people, with wormwood answers false feeding with real feeding, the bitter herb standing for a judgment that reaches the body's most basic need. I will scatter them also among the heathen, whom neither they nor their fathers have known states the exile in its full strangeness, dispersion among peoples with no prior history between them. The sword sent after them till I have consumed them makes clear that scattering alone is not the whole sentence, pursuit continuing into the exile itself.

Jeremiah 9:17-22

call for the mourning women, that they may come: Consider ye, and call for the mourning women summons the professional class of the ancient Near East whose trade was grief performed on command, cunning women skilled enough to teach the whole city to wail in time. The voice of wailing is heard out of Zion before the women even arrive, spontaneous grief that the professionals are called only to shape and sustain, teach your daughters wailing naming grief itself as an inheritance passed on like any other skill. Even the carcases of men shall fall as dung upon the open field, and as the handful after the harvestman closes the unit with the siege's actual arithmetic, the dead too numerous for burial and left instead like gleanings no one gathers.

Jeremiah 9:23-24

Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom: Let not the wise man glory in his wisdom, neither let the mighty man glory in his might, let not the rich man glory in his riches names the three standard grounds of ancient boasting and refuses all three at once. But let him that glorieth glory in this, that he understandeth and knoweth me states the alternative positively, knowledge of the Lord's own character, lovingkindness, judgment and righteousness, as the only boast that holds. Paul draws on this verse's own wording at 1 Corinthians 1:31 and 2 Corinthians 10:17, he that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord, carrying Jeremiah's refusal of self-made boasting into his own argument.

Jeremiah 9:25-26

I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised: The days come that I will punish all them which are circumcised with the uncircumcised names Egypt, Judah, Edom, Ammon and Moab together, surrounding nations that practiced circumcision as a rite without the covenant behind it, standing alongside nations that did not practice it at all. All the house of Israel are uncircumcised in the heart delivers the chapter's last and sharpest reversal, the covenant sign present in the flesh and absent in the place that mattered, the same distinction Paul draws at Romans 2:28-29 between circumcision outward and circumcision of the heart. The bench reads the verse as Jeremiah's own answer to any confidence resting on the mark alone rather than on what the mark was meant to signify.
