Jeremiah 22:1-5

Go down to the house of the king of Judah: The word comes as a summons to the palace itself, addressed to whichever king sits on David's throne, and reduces royal legitimacy to three tests: execute judgment and righteousness, deliver the spoiled from the oppressor, and do no violence to the stranger, the fatherless or the widow. The promise is conditional and stated twice, kings still riding through these gates if the house obeys, the house become a desolation if it does not, the same terms Deuteronomy sets before the whole nation now narrowed to one family. The chapter that follows works through three kings against exactly this measure, Shallum, Jehoiakim, and Coniah tried one by one on the standard laid down here.

Jeremiah 22:6-9

Thou art Gilead unto me: The king's house is addressed as a forest region in its own right, Gilead and Lebanon named for their timber and their height, and the same sentence that praises the wood promises to turn it into an uninhabited wilderness. Verse 8 stages a scene at the ruins, foreign travelers asking one another why the Lord has done this to so great a city, and the answer given in verse 9 is doctrinal rather than political: they forsook the covenant and served other gods. The pattern is the covenant lawsuit Deuteronomy already sets out, judgment explained to onlookers as covenant breach rather than as bad fortune.

Jeremiah 22:10-12

Weep ye not for the dead: The dead man is Josiah, and the instruction not to weep for him is not coldness but comparison: Shallum, who reigned three months as Jehoahaz before Pharaoh Necho deposed him, faces a worse end than his father's grave, going into permanent exile and never seeing his own land again. He shall die in the place whither they have led him captive states the whole of Shallum's remaining life in one clause, and the commentators identify him from 2 Kings 23:30-34 and 1 Chronicles 3:15, the throne-name Shallum standing for the king better known as Jehoahaz. A king's death at home is treated here as the lighter grief next to a king's death in a foreign land.

Jeremiah 22:13-17

Woe unto him that buildeth his house by unrighteousness: Jehoiakim's palace project is described in the terms of forced labor, a neighbor's service taken without wages, wide rooms and cedar ceilings paid for by unpaid work, and the woe is pronounced on the builder rather than on the building. Verse 15 asks the question plainly, shalt thou reign because thou closest thyself in cedar, and sets Josiah beside his son: did not thy father eat and drink, and do judgment and justice, and then it was well with him, judging the cause of the poor and needy read as the true content of knowing God. The commentators take verse 16's was not this to know me as the chapter's own definition of the knowledge of God, tested by how a king treats those with no power to reward him.

Jeremiah 22:18-19

They shall not lament for him: The formal cries of royal mourning, ah my brother, ah sister, ah lord, ah his glory, are named and then refused Jehoiakim by name, and the burial of an ass, dragged out and cast beyond the gates of Jerusalem, replaces the state funeral due a son of Josiah. The commentators note the tension with 2 Kings 24:6, which records only that Jehoiakim slept with his fathers, and read Jeremiah's sentence either as the manner of his death in the siege or as the fate of his corpse rather than a claim about where his body came to rest. Either reading keeps the point the text makes without smoothing it over: no lament, no honored grave, for the builder of the cedar house.

Jeremiah 22:20-23

Go up to Lebanon, and cry: The city itself is told to climb its high places and cry out, Lebanon, Bashan, and the passages beyond Jordan named as the vantage points from which to see how completely thy lovers are destroyed, the political allies Judah trusted for protection now gone. Verse 21 gives the root of the coming grief in one line, I spake unto thee in thy prosperity, but thou saidst, I will not hear, prosperity itself the reason the warning went unheard. The nest in the cedars of verse 23 answers the cedar-built house of verse 14, comfort turned to labor pains at the moment judgment finally arrives.

Jeremiah 22:24-27

were the signet upon my right hand: The signet ring is the king's most intimate possession, worn on the hand and used to seal decrees in his own name, and the oracle names Coniah, Jehoiachin under his throne-name, as exactly that to the Lord, and pulls him off anyway. The list of hands that follow, them that seek thy life, them whose face thou fearest, Nebuchadrezzar and the Chaldeans, moves from the intimate image to the political reality in three steps, ending in a country the king and his mother were not born in and will not leave alive. Verse 27 closes the unit on the single cruelest fact of the exile, the land they desire to return to is the land they will not see again.

Jeremiah 22:28-30

Is this man Coniah a despised broken idol: The rhetorical questions treat the king as an object already discarded, a broken idol, a vessel no one wants, and the earth itself is called three times to witness the sentence that follows: write ye this man childless, a man that shall not prosper in his days, no seed of his sitting upon the throne of David. Coniah in fact had descendants, Shealtiel and Zerubbabel named at 1 Chronicles 3:17-19, so the commentators read childless as a throne-curse rather than a literal one, no son of his ever reigning again in Jerusalem. The line carries weight for the New Testament genealogies: Matthew traces Jesus' legal descent through Jeconiah by way of Joseph, while Luke's line is commonly read as running through Mary and Nathan instead, a way of tracing Christ's kingship through David without inheriting this particular curse. The readings are named as positions held by different writers, not settled by the text itself.
