Jeremiah 10:1-5

O house of Israel: The oracle opens by addressing the house of Israel directly, warning them not to learn the way of the heathen or dread the signs of heaven the nations fear. What follows is the fullest anatomy in the book of how an idol is made, a tree cut from the forest, shaped by the axe, decked with silver and gold, fastened down with nails so it cannot totter. The bench's own restraint matches the caution this passage needs: it describes carving and plating an ancient cult image for worship, and the older commentators read it strictly against that practice rather than any wider application some later readers have drawn from it.

Jeremiah 10:6-10

thy name is great in might: Against the workman's product stands the confession of verse 6, thy name is great in might, a doxology breaking into the polemic before the case for the true God is even finished. Verse 9 catalogs the idol's expense, silver from Tarshish, gold from Uphaz, blue and purple clothing, wealth spent making a thing that cannot walk, and verse 10 answers with the title no idol can claim, the Lord is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king, at whose wrath the earth trembles. The bench reads verses 6-7 and 10 together as the doxology proper, framing the report on idol-making on both sides.

Jeremiah 10:11

even they shall perish from the earth: Verse 11 alone in the book is written in Aramaic rather than Hebrew, the language of the empires Judah would soon answer to, and the commentators note the fitness of it, a sentence against the nations' gods carried in the nations' own tongue, so a Babylonian captor could read his own gods' doom in his own script. The verse is placed as the message the exiles were told to speak back to their captors, the gods that have not made the heavens and the earth shall perish from under these heavens.

Jeremiah 10:12-13

he hath established the world by his wisdom: The doxology continues in creation's own language, the earth made by power, the world established by wisdom, the heavens stretched out by discretion, three verbs across three faculties that Gill reads as a deliberate structure. Verse 13 turns from making to governing, the multitude of waters in the heavens, the vapours raised, the lightnings and rain and wind kept in store, ordinary weather described as an office only the true God holds. The argument runs from what only God can do to who God must be.

Jeremiah 10:14-16

every founder is confounded: Every founder is confounded by the graven image turns the craftsman into the idol's own indictment, the man who cast it left ashamed by what his hands could not animate, no breath in them. Verse 16 answers with the portion of Jacob, not a carved thing chosen and shaped by human hands but the God who is himself the former of all things, and Israel named the rod of his inheritance rather than an owned object, an inversion of the whole chapter's picture of ownership. The bench reads the title, the Lord of hosts is his name, as the chapter's closing seal before the tone turns.

Jeremiah 10:17-18

Gather up thy wares out of the land: The tone breaks from doxology into siege warning without transition, gather up thy wares, an inhabitant told to pack for exile before any army is named. Verse 18 gives the reason as the Lord's own act, I will sling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it so, judgment described as something Judah will discover is real only by living through it.

Jeremiah 10:19-21

Woe is me for my hurt: The prophet speaks now in the city's own voice, my wound is grievous, my tabernacle is spoiled, my children are gone forth of me and they are not, tent-imagery of a nomad's home undone, cords broken with no one left to pitch the curtains again. Verse 21 names the cause the book will return to across its shepherd oracles, for the pastors are become brutish, and have not sought the Lord, and therefore they shall not prosper, and all their flocks shall be scattered, the same charge chapter 23 brings against the kings by name.

Jeremiah 10:22

a great commotion out of the north country: The noise of the bruit, a great commotion out of the north country, is the seething pot of the call vision at 1:13 arriving as fact, the cities of Judah made desolate and a den of dragons describing ruins left to jackals. The north has stood as an unnamed direction across nine chapters, and here for the first time in this stretch the invasion is spoken of as present rather than threatened.

Jeremiah 10:23-25

the way of man is not in himself: The chapter closes with Jeremiah's own prayer, the way of man is not in himself, it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps, an admission that reframes the whole chapter's argument about idols and the nations, the man praying it claims no more self-direction than the wood he mocked, only a different God to answer to. Correct me, but with judgment, not in thine anger asks for discipline without destruction, and the closing plea, pour out thy fury upon the heathen, for they have eaten up Jacob, turns the prayer outward, an appeal the bench reads as intercession for the covenant people rather than personal revenge.
