Isaiah 37:1-3

rent his clothes: Hezekiah answers Rabshakeh's taunt the way Ahaz never answered anything: he rends his clothes, puts on sackcloth, and goes into the house of the Lord before he sends for the prophet. The message to Isaiah reaches for a birth image for the nation's helplessness, the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth, a crisis with no human power to finish it. Henry contrasts this king's posture with his father's altar built to a foreign god under the same kind of pressure.

Isaiah 37:4-5

lift up thy prayer for the remnant that is left: The embassy's request to Isaiah names what Rabshakeh has actually done, reproach the living God, and asks the prophet to pray because the king cannot see past the siege to know whether the Lord will answer. Barnes notes the careful phrase, it may be, a request framed in hope rather than presumption, from men who have just watched a besieged city with no answer of its own. The remnant that is left is the same word this chapter returns to at verse 32, the size of what still stands inside the walls.

Isaiah 37:6-7

Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard: Isaiah's answer comes before any siege engine has moved, a blast, a rumour, and a return by the sword, in that order, and all three land on Sennacherib rather than on Jerusalem. Delitzsch reads the blast as the Lord's own breath set against the boasting breath of the Assyrian king's messengers, an image the taunt itself supplies. The oracle promises an ending in the king's own land, which the chapter's last two verses will record exactly.

Isaiah 37:8-9

warring against Libnah: Rabshakeh's return finds his master already pulled off Lachish and fighting at Libnah, the campaign moving without having taken the city its own general had threatened. Word of Tirhakah of Ethiopia coming to make war forces Sennacherib's hand, and he answers the rumour Isaiah had promised with a second round of threats rather than a retreat. Barnes places Tirhakah among the datable figures of the chapter, useful for fixing the campaign against the wider Assyrian record.

Isaiah 37:10-13

Let not thy God, in whom thou trustest, deceive thee: The written letter repeats Rabshakeh's speech in a shorter, colder form, naming Gozan, Haran, Rezeph and the roll call of cities whose gods did not save them. The argument assumes the Lord is one more national god among the conquered, no different in kind from the idols of Hamath or Sepharvaim, which is the exact error the king's own prayer will answer in the next unit. Gill notes that the letter is meant to reach Hezekiah in writing precisely because the spoken word had already failed to break him.

Isaiah 37:14-15

spread it before the Lord: Hezekiah takes the letter itself into the temple and spreads it before the Lord, an act the older writers read as a king laying the enemy's own words down as evidence for God to answer. Henry calls it prayer by object as much as by word, the accusation held open where the God it insults can read it for himself. The gesture answers the request the servants had carried to Isaiah at verse 4 with the king's own body in the temple rather than a message sent through another.

Isaiah 37:16-17

that dwellest between the cherubims: Hezekiah's prayer opens by naming the God enthroned above the cherubim of the ark, the maker of heaven and earth, before it asks anything at all, the address itself already answering the letter's assumption that the Lord is a local deity. Incline thine ear and hear, open thine eyes and see set petition against the specific words Sennacherib had written, asking God to read what the king has just spread before him. Barnes notes the prayer's structure follows the letter point by point rather than answering it in general terms.

Isaiah 37:18-20

have laid waste all the nations: The prayer concedes the letter's facts, the kings of Assyria have indeed laid waste every nation named, and explains why: their gods were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone, fit only for burning. The petition turns on that concession, save us from his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that thou art the Lord, even thou only, asking for deliverance as a public demonstration rather than a private rescue. Henry reads this as the difference between Judah's God and every god the letter had listed, the one point Sennacherib's own argument had missed.

Isaiah 37:21-22

Whereas thou hast prayed to me against Sennacherib king of Assyria: Isaiah's oracle answers the prayer by name before it says another word, and the answer arrives as a taunt returned upon the taunter: the virgin, the daughter of Zion, hath despised thee, and laughed thee to scorn. Delitzsch reads the image as a deliberate reversal, the city Sennacherib expected to break instead pictured shaking her head at him from behind walls he has not touched. Jerusalem is given the very posture of contempt the Assyrian letters had aimed at the Lord.

Isaiah 37:23-25

even against the Holy One of Israel: The oracle names precisely whom the boasting has reached, even against the Holy One of Israel, the title this book carries more than any other book of Scripture, here turned directly on the man who used it as a rhetorical target. The king's own words are quoted back at him, the multitude of my chariots, I have digged and drunk water, I have dried up all the rivers, boasts of engineering and conquest set beside a title he never once used correctly. Barnes reads the digged wells and dried rivers as literal siege-engineering boasts, the kind of claim Assyrian royal inscriptions make about themselves elsewhere.

Isaiah 37:26-27

Hast thou not heard long ago: The Lord answers the boast with a claim of his own authorship reaching further back than any campaign Sennacherib can name, hast thou not heard long ago, how I have done it, and of ancient times, that I have formed it. Every victory the king counted as his own skill is reassigned as something planned and permitted from the start, now have I brought it to pass. Gill reads the withered grass and blasted corn of verse 27 as the described condition of the conquered nations themselves, not a threat aimed at Sennacherib yet.

Isaiah 37:28-29

I know thy abode: Where the king had boasted of knowing conquered lands, the Lord answers with a claim to know the king himself, his abode, his going out and his coming in, and his rage. The hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips is the image of a captured animal led by force, turned back the way it came, a picture drawn from the same Assyrian art that shows captives led exactly this way. Delitzsch notes the reversal is total, the empire that led nations by hooks and cords is itself pictured led home the same way.

Isaiah 37:30-32

this shall be a sign unto thee: The sign given to Hezekiah covers three growing seasons, eating what grows of itself in the year of the siege's aftermath, then what springs from that, and only in the third year sowing and reaping as normal, a timeline tied to the disrupted farming a siege and its aftermath would actually cause rather than a supernatural marvel. The readings on the mechanics differ, some taking the two fallow years as the direct effect of the Assyrian withdrawal and the ravaged land it left, others reading a more extended recovery, and the bench names both without forcing either. The remnant that shall escape takes root downward and bears fruit upward, the zeal of the Lord of hosts named as the cause of both the escape and the growth.

Isaiah 37:33-35

nor cast a bank against it: The oracle promises what Rabshakeh's siege never delivers, no arrow, no shield wall, no bank cast up against the city, the very tools of a siege named and denied one by one. Henry reads the promise as unusually specific for prophecy, a king who will not even begin the standard operations of the trade he has practiced against every other city named in his own letter. The city is defended for two reasons held together, for mine own sake, and for my servant David's sake, the Lord's own honor and the covenant with David named as one ground.

Isaiah 37:36

smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: The angel of the Lord goes forth in a single night and the camp wakes to a hundred and fourscore and five thousand dead, the histories pass across this site verifies the sentence as one report carried in two books, this verse and 2 Kings 19:35 word for word. No siege engine is named because none is used, the promise of verse 33 answered by an event outside every category the letter's boasts had assumed. Delitzsch and Barnes both decline to name the mechanism, plague and direct visitation both proposed by later readers, and the text itself states only that the Lord's messenger did it.

Isaiah 37:37-38

dwelt at Nineveh: Sennacherib's own retreat fulfills the word given him before he ever heard the rumour of Tirhakah, he departs, returns, and dwells at Nineveh, the very ending Isaiah named at verse 7. His death comes at the hands of his own sons while worshipping Nisroch his god, the last irony of a campaign built on mocking gods of wood and stone, struck down inside the house of one. Josephus and the Assyrian royal records both place the assassination years after the siege, a gap the bench notes without treating it as a problem for the text, since the oracle promised a fall by the sword in his own land and named no date for it.
