Genesis 12:1-3

The command is three separations in rising order of cost, country, then kindred, then father's house, and Joshua later says plainly that Terah's family had served other gods. Seven things are promised in answer, running from one nation out to all families of the earth. Paul takes the last clause and calls it the gospel preached beforehand to Abraham.

Genesis 12:4-5

He goes without being told where, and Hebrews says he went out not knowing whither he went. He is seventy-five, and the text counts what he takes, down to the souls they had gotten in Haran. The obedience is immediate and the destination is withheld.

Genesis 12:6-7

Abram arrives and the land is already occupied, which the writer states without softening it. God appears and promises the country to his seed rather than to him, and Abram answers with an altar. He builds it where the promise was spoken, and altars mark his route from here on.

Genesis 12:8-9

At Bethel he pitches a tent and builds a second altar, and the two are not the same kind of thing: the tent moves and the stones stay. Bethel will hold him again on the way back out of Egypt, and it will hold Jacob twice more. Then he keeps moving south, which is the direction of Egypt, and the next verse is the famine.

Genesis 12:10

there was a famine in the land: The famine arrives immediately after the promise, and Abram goes down to Egypt without being told to. What follows runs the Exodus in miniature: famine drives the family down, Pharaoh takes what is not his, the LORD plagues Pharaoh, and they are sent away enriched. Israel will walk that same road as a nation, and Matthew applies Hosea's line about God calling his son out of Egypt to Christ.

Genesis 12:11-12

He works out the danger only as the border comes into sight. The reasoning is sound as far as it goes, that they will see a beautiful woman and that a husband is the one obstacle to taking her. What is missing from the calculation is the promise he had been given six verses earlier.

Genesis 12:13

The plan is a half-truth, since Sarai was his half sister, and it saves his life at her expense. He does the same thing again before Abimelech in chapter 20, and admits there that it had been standing policy from the day he left home. Isaac does it a third time in chapter 26, in the same town, to a king of the same name, with Rebekah.

Genesis 12:14-16

It happens as he feared and worse, since the princes commend her to Pharaoh and she is taken into his house. Abram is paid for her in sheep, oxen, asses, servants and camels, and the text itemises the list. The mother of the promised seed is inside another man's household while the man carrying the promise grows rich on it.

Genesis 12:17

God steps in for a promise that Abram had just put at risk. Plagues falling on a Pharaoh over a woman he should not have is the sentence Exodus will repeat at the scale of a nation. Nothing in the verse gives Abram any part in the rescue.

Genesis 12:18-20

The sharpest speech in the chapter is Pharaoh's, and it is a rebuke of the man God had called. Abram says nothing back, and no answer of his is recorded anywhere. He leaves with more than he came with, which closes the pattern and opens the trouble, since the older writers note that Hagar the Egyptian turns up in his household after this.
