Chapter summary

Isaac in Gerar. Famine drives him south; the LORD renews the covenant directly to him. ‘Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee.’ Isaac replays his father's deception — Rebekah as sister — and is rebuked by Abimelech. He sows and reaps a hundredfold. The Philistines stop up the wells; Isaac re-digs them and moves on, naming quarrels and roominess in the land. At Beersheba the LORD appears again; Isaac builds an altar; Abimelech comes to covenant with him. The chapter is the quietest of the patriarchal biographies — Isaac as the son who inherits, not the son who ventures.
