Galatians 2:1-2

Fourteen years after his conversion, and probably identical with the Acts 15 council though some hold it an earlier famine visit of Acts 11, Paul goes up again to Jerusalem, this time by revelation rather than summons. He communicated his gospel privately to the leaders first, not to win their approval for its truth but so his years of labor among the Gentiles would not run in vain if the pillars broke fellowship over it.

Galatians 2:3-5

compelled to be circumcised: Titus, a Greek, stood as the test case, and he was not compelled to be circumcised, a decision Paul treats as settling the principle for every Gentile convert after him. The false brethren who came in privily to spy out our liberty are the letter's own first beat of the liberty thread that runs to 5:1 and 5:13; Paul gave no ground for even an hour, because the truth of the gospel itself was at stake, not merely a custom.

Galatians 2:6-7

Paul's aside about those who seemed to be somewhat is not disrespect for James, Peter, and John but a refusal to let human standing settle a question of truth, since God accepteth no man's person. What the pillars did add was recognition: they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision had been committed to Paul as surely as the gospel of the circumcision had been committed to Peter, two commissions, one gospel.

Galatians 2:8-10

The same God who worked effectually in Peter toward the circumcision worked just as mightily in Paul toward the Gentiles, so the two fields divide by audience, not by rank or by a different gospel. The right hand of fellowship was the ancient gesture sealing a formal agreement, and the only condition attached, remember the poor, was one Paul was already keeping, named in Acts 11's famine relief and in the later collection of 2 Corinthians 8 and 9.

Galatians 2:11-12

At Antioch Paul opposed Peter openly, because he was to be blamed: Peter had eaten freely with Gentile believers until certain men came from James, then withdrew and separated himself, fearing them which were of the circumcision. The text names fear as Peter's motive plainly, and the confrontation is taught at the strength the text gives it; both apostles are honored elsewhere in the New Testament, and Peter's own later ministry and 2 Peter 3:15's warm word for Paul are the church's record of his restoration.

Galatians 2:13-14

The dissimulation spread: other Jewish believers followed Peter's withdrawal, and even Barnabas, Paul's own partner in the Gentile mission, was carried away with it, showing how far the pressure reached. Paul's rebuke before them all charged Peter with compelling Gentiles toward Jewish practice by his example rather than his words, living as a Gentile himself yet forcing others toward a standard he did not keep. Commentators divide over whether Peter's authority in Antioch outranked Paul's own, and the text is left to answer that question rather than the exposition.

Galatians 2:15-16

Verse 16 states the letter's doctrinal center three times inside one sentence, each clause turning on the same contrast: justification comes by the faith of Jesus Christ rather than the works of the law, and by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified. Even Jews by nature, born inside the covenant with none of the Gentiles' disadvantage, had still believed on Christ Jesus for justification, which Paul offers as proof that law-keeping was never the ground even for those who kept it best.

Galatians 2:17-18

Paul heads off a slander before it lands: if seeking justification in Christ still leaves believers found as sinners, does that make Christ a minister of sin? God forbid answers it, and verse 18 turns the charge back on the accusers, since rebuilding the law as a ground of righteousness after tearing it down as such is what actually makes a man a transgressor.

Galatians 2:19-20

Through the law itself Paul died to the law, its own curse falling on him in Christ, so that he might live unto God, and verse 20 states the union in the first person: I am crucified with Christ, the letter's second beat of the crucifixion chain after the argument is set. Nevertheless I live, yet not I answers the death with a resurrection life, Christ living in him, and the life he now lives in the flesh he lives by faith of the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me, the most personal line in the whole letter.

Galatians 2:21

The chapter's argument closes on a single stroke: I do not frustrate the grace of God, for if righteousness could come by the law, then Christ died for nothing. This is the verse the whole letter has been building toward and the hinge into chapter 3's proof from Abraham, since a righteousness available through law-keeping would have made the cross an unnecessary act of God.
