Acts 10:1-2

Cornelius, a centurion of the band called the Italian band, holds a middle officer's rank in a cohort recruited from Roman citizens rather than provincial auxiliaries, the same rank structure Ramsay's study of the Roman military in the eastern provinces documents in detail. He is described as devout, fearing God with all his house, giving much alms to the people, and praying to God always, the fullest description of a righteous Gentile the book gives before Peter ever reaches him. The bench reads him as a God-fearer, a recognized category of Gentile attached to the synagogue without full proselyte conversion, a man already living toward the light he had before the fuller light arrives.

Acts 10:3-4

An angel of God appears to Cornelius in a vision evidently, at the ninth hour, the same hour of afternoon prayer Peter and John once kept at the temple, so that a Gentile centurion is shown keeping the same hours of devotion as the apostles themselves. His fear at the sight, what is it, Lord, meets an answer that names his private devotion as already having reached heaven, thy prayers and thine alms are come up for a memorial before God. The bench is careful that this is not merit earning salvation, since Cornelius still needs Peter's message to be saved, but the acceptance of a sincere seeker's devotion as the occasion for sending him the gospel.

Acts 10:5-6

send men to Joppa: Send men to Joppa, and call for one Simon, whose surname is Peter gives Cornelius specific, checkable directions, down to the detail that he lodges with a tanner by the sea side, the kind of precision Luke's history keeps throughout the book. God could have told Cornelius the gospel directly through the angel, and does not, choosing instead to send him to a human messenger, a pattern the bench reads as consistent with how the gospel spreads everywhere else in Acts, through witnesses rather than direct revelation alone.

Acts 10:7-8

Cornelius calls two household servants and a devout soldier who waited on him continually, choosing men from his own household rather than strangers, and declares all these things to them before sending them to Joppa. A devout soldier under a devout centurion suggests Cornelius's own faith had already shaped the men under his command, a household reached before Peter's gospel ever arrives to explain what they had been shown. The obedience is immediate, the same unhesitating response that will mark Peter's own side of the story within the same chapter.

Acts 10:9-10

As Cornelius's men draw near Joppa, Peter goes up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour, noon, the ordinary flat roof of a Judean house serving as private space for devotion. Hunger interrupts his prayer, and while a meal is being prepared he falls into a trance, the same word Luke uses for the ecstatic state prophets receive visions in elsewhere in Scripture. The timing, Peter's hunger and vision arriving in the very hour Cornelius's messengers are approaching the city, is the kind of coincidence the bench reads as providence rather than accident throughout this whole account.

Acts 10:11-13

Heaven opens and a vessel like a great sheet knit at the four corners descends, holding all manner of fourfooted beasts, wild beasts, creeping things, and fowls of the air together without the distinctions Leviticus drew between clean and unclean. A voice commands, rise, Peter, kill, and eat, an order that would require Peter to violate food laws he had kept his entire life without exception. The vision's content is deliberately mixed, clean and unclean animals sharing the same sheet, so that no reading of it as merely about diet alone survives the scene that follows in Cornelius's house.

Acts 10:14-16

Peter's refusal, not so, Lord, for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean, answers a direct command with an objection, the same combination of address and resistance Ananias had shown back in chapter nine. The second answer, what God hath cleansed, that call not thou common, corrects the category itself rather than simply overruling Peter's scruple, and Peter will apply the same principle to people rather than food only a few verses later in this same chapter. The vision repeats three times, the number Scripture uses elsewhere to mark certainty, before the sheet is received back up into heaven, leaving Peter to puzzle over what he has just been shown.

Acts 10:17-20

While Peter doubted in himself what this vision which he had seen should mean, the men from Cornelius have already made enquiry for Simon's house and stand at the gate, the vision's meaning arriving in the form of three actual visitors before Peter has worked it out in his own mind. The Spirit tells him directly, behold, three men seek thee, arise, get thee down, and go with them, doubting nothing, for I have sent them, removing by direct word any excuse Peter's scruples might otherwise have raised. The Spirit's own claim, for I have sent them, ties this whole sequence together as one continuous act, the vision, the vision's interpreter, and the men at the gate all governed by the same hand.

Acts 10:21-23

Peter goes down and asks plainly, what is the cause wherefore ye are come, obedient to the Spirit's instruction before he yet understands the reason behind it. The men answer with Cornelius's own reputation, a just man, one that feareth God, of good report among all the nation of the Jews, testimony from Gentile soldiers about a Roman officer's standing among the Jewish community he lived beside. Peter lodges them, a small act that already crosses the boundary the vision addressed, since a strict reading of custom discouraged even hosting Gentiles under one's own roof, and in the morning he goes with them accompanied by certain Jewish brethren from Joppa who will later serve as witnesses to everything that happens.

Acts 10:24

Cornelius waited for them, having called together his kinsmen and near friends, turning what could have been a private conversation into a gathering of everyone he could bring, confident enough in what the angel told him to stake his household's attention on it. The bench reads his preparation as itself a kind of faith already in motion before Peter has said a single word of the gospel to him, a household made ready to receive whatever God was about to say through this stranger.

Acts 10:25-27

Cornelius falls at Peter's feet and worships him, an act that may reflect Roman deference to a man he believed carried divine authority rather than settled theology about who Peter was. Peter's refusal, stand up, I myself also am a man, is one of the clearest statements in the book against venerating any messenger in place of the God who sent him, a line the church has returned to whenever reverence for a teacher threatens to slide into something owed to God alone. He goes in and finds many that were come together, Cornelius's household and friends already assembled and waiting, the audience for the sermon Peter is about to preach.

Acts 10:28-29

Peter states the barrier openly before he preaches a word of the gospel, ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company or come unto one of another nation, naming a social custom rather than a written commandment of the law itself, since Scripture nowhere forbade a Jew from entering a Gentile's house. But God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean applies the sheet vision to people directly, the very words the voice had used of the animals now used of Cornelius and his household. Peter asks why he was sent for, still working from obedience toward understanding rather than the reverse, exactly as he had at the gate in Joppa.

Acts 10:30-33

Cornelius repeats the angel's words almost exactly as Luke first reported them, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God, the doubled telling underlining how carefully Luke wants the reader to trust this account. Four days ago I was fasting until this hour anchors the vision in specific time, matching the ninth hour of Peter's own trance days before, the two men's experiences running on a shared timetable neither could have arranged. Cornelius's closing words, now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God, is as complete a statement of readiness to receive the gospel as any preacher could ask for from a congregation.

Acts 10:34-35

Peter opens his mouth with the conclusion the whole chapter has been building toward, of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons, a statement of principle Peter states as something he has only now fully perceived rather than always known. But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him does not teach that good works apart from Christ save a person, since the rest of Peter's own sermon goes on to preach faith in Jesus's name for remission of sins, but that no nation is excluded in advance from being sought and reached. The bench reads this verse as the doctrinal center the entire Cornelius narrative exists to establish, the truth the vision, the voice, and the two converging households were all sent to teach one reluctant apostle.

Acts 10:36-38

The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ, he is Lord of all, roots Peter's message to Gentiles in the same word already given to Israel rather than a separate message invented for this new audience. That word, published throughout all Judea, began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached, gives Cornelius the same historical outline Luke's own gospel had already laid out for Theophilus. How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power, who went about doing good and healing all that were oppressed of the devil, summarizes the entire ministry Luke had narrated at length, compressed here into a sentence a Roman centurion who had never met Jesus could still recognize as history rather than legend.

Acts 10:39-41

We are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem states the apostolic qualification the book has insisted on since chapter one, a witness must have seen the ministry firsthand. Whom they slew and hanged on a tree names the cross without softening it, the same phrase Peter had already used at Pentecost and before the council, tying this sermon to his earlier speeches in the book. Him God raised up the third day and shewed him openly, not to all the people but unto witnesses chosen before of God, explains why the resurrection was not a public spectacle open to every eye, a chosen circle of witnesses who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead standing as Luke's own answer to any charge that the resurrection was invented rather than seen.

Acts 10:42-43

He commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead, placing the same Jesus who healed and was crucified in the seat of final judgment over every person living or dead. To him give all the prophets witness gathers the whole Old Testament as a single chorus of testimony rather than isolated proof texts, exactly the pattern the earlier apostolic speeches in this book have already used. Whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins closes the sermon on the widest possible word, whosoever, spoken to a Gentile household about to receive the very thing Peter is describing before he finishes the sentence.

Acts 10:44-46

While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word, the gift arriving before baptism and before Peter has even finished his sentence, removing any doubt about whether these Gentiles first needed to become Jewish proselytes. The circumcision believers who came with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Ghost was poured out on the Gentiles also, their astonishment itself Luke's evidence that nothing about this outcome had been staged or expected. They heard them speak with tongues and magnify God, the same sign that marked Pentecost and will mark Ephesus later in the book, the Spirit bearing the same witness to Gentile believers that he bore at Jerusalem, a pattern the church receives as his continuing work, and the text's own purpose here is proof to the Jewish witnesses rather than a template asserted for every future conversion.

Acts 10:47-48

Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we, turns the old barrier completely around, the very Spirit that once seemed to require circumcision and law-keeping to receive now already given to men water baptism could hardly be withheld from. Peter commands them to be baptized in the name of the Lord, water baptism following the Spirit's baptism here in a sequence commentators have discussed relative to Pentecost's own order, where repentance and baptism preceded the gift, the two accounts read alongside each other rather than forced into one fixed pattern. They then prayed him to tarry certain days, the newly Gentile-inclusive church wanting more of Peter's teaching before he returns to Jerusalem to explain what had happened, the account the next chapter will show he needed to give in full.
