1 Samuel 9:1

Saul's introduction opens with his father's five-generation pedigree, a mighty man of power, meaning a man of standing and property in Benjamin rather than a warrior's title. The genealogy roots the coming king's line before naming him, the same convention Judges used for Gideon and Samson. Samuel's own book began with Elkanah's line at 1:1 in the same way, weight given to family before the man himself appears.

1 Samuel 9:2

Saul is chosen by the measure a crowd would choose, goodlier than any and head and shoulders above the tallest man in Israel, the very words the nation repeats at his coronation in 10:23. It is the eye's standard, and 16:7 will answer it directly when Samuel looks at David's brothers and God says that man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart. The two kings of this book are measured by opposite yardsticks, and this verse sets the first one down before the reader meets the second.

1 Samuel 9:3-5

The straying donkeys send Saul across four districts of the hill country, mount Ephraim, Shalisha, Shalim and the land of the Benjamites, and the search finds nothing until Saul is ready to quit and go home to his worried father. The lost-property errand is as unplanned as David's trip carrying bread and cheese to his brothers' camp at 17:17-20, and in both chapters an ordinary errand is the road God uses to bring a future king into the story. Saul's readiness to turn back at verse 5 makes the servant's suggestion, and Saul's willingness to follow it, the hinge everything else in the chapter turns on.

1 Samuel 9:6-8

The servant knows the town has a man of God whose word never fails, and proposes consulting him about the road home. Saul's objection is practical rather than doubting, he has nothing left to bring, and the servant's fourth part of a shekel of silver becomes the gift. The custom of bringing a present before consulting a man of God recurs later at 1 Kings 14:3, when Jeroboam's wife carries bread and cracknels to Ahijah.

1 Samuel 9:9-10

Scripture pauses the story to explain its own older word, and seer occurs here for the first time in the Bible: he that is now called a Prophet was beforetime called a Seer. The verse is a narrator's aside written after the vocabulary had already shifted, placed at the exact moment the word of the LORD, precious and rare through chapter 3, is about to speak again through the man the town still calls the seer. Saul will use the older name without knowing why, and the servant's guidance carries them straight to him.

1 Samuel 9:11-13

The girls at the well answer with more detail than the question needed, the sacrifice today, the order of eating, the very hour Saul should expect to find him, and the precision reads like a town that already knows its prophet's schedule. Saul cannot yet know that the LORD had told Samuel the day before exactly whom to expect, so what looks like local knowledge is the edge of a plan already set in motion.

1 Samuel 9:14-17

Samuel walks out of the gate at the very moment Saul arrives, and the narrator has already shown the reader why: the LORD told Samuel the day before, to morrow about this time I will send thee a man out of the land of Benjamin. God's own word names Saul captain and gives the reason, that he may save my people out of the hand of the Philistines, before Saul has said a word or asked for a kingdom. Behold the man whom I spake to thee of, spoken to Samuel alone, sets divine choice against the crowd's later choice at 10:24, the same man chosen on a different ground.

1 Samuel 9:18-19

Saul does not recognize the man he is speaking to and asks a stranger for directions to the seer's house, still using the word the chapter just explained. Samuel answers plainly, I am the seer, and immediately offers more than Saul asked for, food, lodging and news of what is in thine heart before Saul can raise the question he came to ask. The man seeking directions to a house is handed a place at a table he has not earned and information he did not request.

1 Samuel 9:20-21

Samuel dismisses the errand before Saul can ask about it, then turns the conversation from lost property to a question with no easy answer, on whom is all the desire of Israel. Saul's reply measures himself by tribal arithmetic, a Benjamite of the smallest tribe and the least family in it, and the humility sounds genuine here in a way it will not by chapter 15. Samuel later reminds him of this very moment, when thou wast little in thine own sight (15:17), so his own words at this table become the standard he is later measured against.

1 Samuel 9:22-24

Samuel seats Saul at the head of about thirty guests and calls for a specific portion, the shoulder, reserved in advance for a guest Saul did not know he would be. The cook's answer, kept for thee since I said, I have invited the people, shows Samuel arranged this meal before Saul ever set out looking for asses, matching the word given him the day before at verse 16. A stranger off the road is served the best cut at a feast prepared for him before he existed to the town as anyone at all.

1 Samuel 9:25-26

The night's conversation happens on the housetop, the cool open-air gathering place of an ordinary house, and Samuel uses the whole night to prepare Saul for what the morning will bring. They rise early and walk out together, an unremarkable start to a day that will end with a private anointing the town never sees. Nothing marks this scene as unusual yet, which is exactly how the chapter wants a coronation to arrive, on an ordinary errand's last ordinary morning.

1 Samuel 9:27

Samuel sends the servant ahead so the word he is about to speak reaches Saul alone, the same privacy the chapter has kept since verse 15, when the LORD spoke to Samuel in his ear a day before Saul came. What follows in chapter 10 is the anointing itself, but this verse closes chapter 9 on the threshold of it, a king chosen in secret about to be told so in secret before Israel ever votes on the matter at 10:24. The errand for lost asses ends with the word of God waiting for one man alone on an empty road.
