1 Kings 16:1-2

against Baasha, saying: Jehu's oracle against Baasha reuses, almost word for word, the charge Ahijah brought against Jeroboam at 14:7 through 14:9: exalted out of the dust, made prince, and now made my people to sin. Baasha took the throne by killing every one of Jeroboam's house at 15:29, and the same words that raised him now condemn him for repeating the very sin he was raised up to punish. Kings measures every northern king by his distance from Jeroboam's calves, and Baasha fails his own test.

1 Kings 16:3-4

The sentence itself, thy house like the house of Jeroboam, sends Baasha's own line back to the fate his hands carried out on Jeroboam's line at 15:29. The dogs and fowls formula against Baasha's house is this chain's second link, following Jeroboam's house at 14:11 and preceding Ahab and Jezebel's at 21:19 through 21:24, the same sentence falling on three dynasties before the book turns south. No burial was the ancient world's severest dishonor, and the text simply states the terms rather than describing the horror.

1 Kings 16:5-7

The closing formula, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Israel, seals Baasha's reign here and marks a source the author used but did not preserve; the same line closes four reigns before this chapter ends. Verse 7 adds a second charge behind the first: Baasha is judged not only for keeping the calves but for killing Nadab's whole house with his own hand, even though that killing carried out the sentence spoken in chapter 14. The commentators read the addition as a warning to any agent of judgment, that the office does not excuse the manner or the heart it is carried out in.

1 Kings 16:8-10

Elah reigns two years and dies as his father's sentence lands, drunk in the house of his own steward while his army sits at the Philistine siege of Gibbethon. Zimri, captain of half his chariots, kills him in that same house, the same undefended weakness that let Baasha's line be exposed now visited on the son. Nadab, Elah and soon Zimri each fall inside a window of years or days, and a fourth reign in a row opening with an assassination shows a throne no house can hold.

1 Kings 16:11-13

Zimri's purge leaves not one that pisseth against a wall, a coarse idiom for every male of Baasha's line, and the narrator credits the massacre directly to the word of the LORD spoken by Jehu the son of Hanani. Verse 13 sums Baasha and Elah under one word, vanities, the Hebrew term for an idol that means emptiness or breath, the same charge that opened the oracle at verse 2. Zimri carries the sentence out in full, and the text gives him no credit for the deed; his own house is next.

1 Kings 16:14-15

The chronicle formula closes Elah's short reign, and verse 15 opens Zimri's with the same clock already running, seven days in Tirzah while the army still besieges Gibbethon. Four kings have now died by the same violence they used to rise, and the text tells each fall without pausing to moralize over it. The repetition itself is the argument: a throne built on Jeroboam's sin cannot outlast the pattern it copies.

1 Kings 16:16-18

Word reaches the camp at Gibbethon and the army crowns its own general on the spot, the instinct armies would show centuries later crowning emperors in the field. Omri marches home and besieges Tirzah; when the city falls, Zimri burns the king's house over himself rather than face capture, a death the ancient historians compare to the last king of Assyria's own end by fire. Seven days after killing Elah, the killer is gone, and Israel has had three kings inside one year.

1 Kings 16:19-20

The verdict on Zimri names the same sin named on every king since Jeroboam, walking in his way and making Israel to sin, the refrain that falls seventeen times across both books and never changes even as the names do. Verse 20 closes his seven days with the same chronicle formula given every other king, his treason filed beside their acts and might as though the length of a reign made no difference to how the book records it. Kings measures every northern king against one man's sin, not against how long he sat on the throne.

1 Kings 16:21-22

Israel splits a second time, now inside its own splinter kingdom, half following Tibni the son of Ginath and half following Omri. Comparing the years given at verses 15, 23 and 29, the commentators reckon the two rivals held the field together for about four years before Omri prevailed, and the text says only that Tibni died, leaving the manner as silence rather than filling it with invention. A kingdom born from revolt against David's line now revolts against itself.

1 Kings 16:23-24

Omri buys the hill of Samaria from a man named Shemer for two talents of silver and builds there the city that stands as Israel's capital for the rest of its history, the city Assyria will finally take in 2 Ki 17. Assyrian royal inscriptions call the northern kingdom bit-Khumri, the house of Omri, on tablets naming later kings who were not his blood, evidence the field reads as a mark of how deep his dynasty's name reached even after his own line was cut off. The city keeps the former owner's name, though Eastern custom more often named a city for its builder instead.

1 Kings 16:25-27

Omri wrought evil and did worse than all that were before him, a sentence this chapter repeats and then raises twice more, once for Omri and once again for his son. Micah 6:16 later names the statutes of Omri as a byword, decrees the commentators read as an organized system enforcing the calf worship rather than merely permitting it. The chronicle formula closes his reign the same way it closed every king before him, might and acts filed in a book the author expects his reader to know and does not reproduce.

1 Kings 16:28-29

Omri dies a natural death and is buried in the city he built, the first king of this dynasty to leave a throne to a son rather than to a killer. Ahab holds that throne twenty and two years, longer than any northern king before him, and the chapter has already spent nine verses establishing that Omri did worse than every predecessor. Ahab is about to be measured against that new floor rather than against Jeroboam alone.

1 Kings 16:30-31

Above all that were before him repeats Omri's own epitaph and raises it one degree further for the son, and the Hebrew of verse 31 asks was it a light thing, a question that answers itself by refusing an easy no. Marrying Jezebel, daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, ties Ahab's throne to Tyre's priesthood of Baal and Astarte by treaty as much as by love, and the verse names that marriage as the hinge everything after it turns on.

1 Kings 16:32-33

Ahab builds Baal an altar and a house in Samaria itself, the capital his father bought, and adds a grove, Asherah, the goddess image the older writers name by different words but the same office. Verse 33's closing line outdoes verse 30's already: Ahab did more to provoke the LORD God of Israel to anger than all the kings of Israel that were before him, the chapter's third and steepest escalation in nine verses. Manufactured religion has moved from two calves at Bethel and Dan to a state temple for a foreign god inside one royal lifetime.

1 Kings 16:34

Hiel of Bethel rebuilds Jericho and the price is his own sons, Abiram at the foundation and Segub the youngest at the gates, exactly the sentence Joshua spoke over that ground at Josh 6:26 nearly five centuries earlier. The chapter that opened by fulfilling a sentence on Baasha's house inside one generation closes by fulfilling one held in reserve for centuries, and the narrator names both the same way, according to the word of the Lord. Whether the deaths came through the ordinary loss any builder risked or through a direct stroke, the commentators differ, and the text itself names only that the word Joshua spoke came to pass.
