The Prophecy Timeline
Messianic prophecy in the order it was spoken: from the patriarchs to the fall of Jerusalem. Each era carries the promises made inside it, in its own words, with the passage where the New Testament says it landed.
Patriarchs

Bodily Transformation of Believers
“And after my skin has been thus destroyed, yet in my flesh I shall see God.”
“Behold! I tell you a mystery. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.”
Believers' bodies will be instantaneously transformed into immortal, glorified bodies.
This transformation occurs at Christ's return. The glorified body will be like Christ's resurrection body - physical but not subject to death or decay.
The early church strongly affirmed bodily resurrection against Gnostic spiritualization.
Paul describes the resurrection body as 'spiritual' (pneumatikos) meaning Spirit-empowered, not immaterial.

1400 BC – 1000 BC · 4 propheciesHis Second Coming & KingdomFalse Prophet Performs Signs
Awaiting Fulfillment“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, 'Let us go after other gods,' which you have not known, 'and let us serve them,' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet.”

False Prophet Performs Signs
“If a prophet or a dreamer of dreams arises among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, and the sign or wonder that he tells you comes to pass, and if he says, 'Let us go after other gods,' which you have not known, 'and let us serve them,' you shall not listen to the words of that prophet.”
“It performs great signs, even making fire come down from heaven to earth in front of people, and by the signs that it is allowed to work in the presence of the beast it deceives those who dwell on earth.”
A false religious leader will perform miraculous signs to deceive people into worshiping the Antichrist.
The 'second beast' or 'false prophet' forms an unholy trinity with Satan and Antichrist. He promotes beast worship through supernatural deception.
Scripture warns that signs alone don't validate truth - the message must be tested.
The false prophet parodies the Holy Spirit's role in testifying to Christ. He will be cast into the lake of fire with the beast.
His Second Coming & KingdomFinal Defeat of Satan

Final Defeat of Satan
“It shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.”
“And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone... and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.”
Satan will be eternally defeated.
Satan's final defeat was promised in Genesis; Revelation shows its fulfillment.
His Second Coming & KingdomMark of the Beast
Awaiting Fulfillment“You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.”

Mark of the Beast
“You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes.”
“Also it causes all, both small and great, both rich and poor, both free and slave, to be marked on the right hand or the forehead, so that no one can buy or sell unless he has the mark, that is, the name of the beast or the number of its name.”
The Antichrist will require everyone to receive a mark to participate in commerce.
Interpretations range from literal physical mark to symbolic allegiance. Modern technology (RFID, microchips, digital currency) has renewed speculation.
The mark parodies God's command for Israel to bind His words on hand and forehead (tefillin).
666 may encode 'Nero Caesar' in Hebrew gematria. The mark represents ultimate allegiance to the beast system.
His Second Coming & KingdomTree of Life Restored
Awaiting Fulfillment“Then the LORD God said, 'Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever'—therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden.”

Tree of Life Restored
“Then the LORD God said, 'Behold, the man has become like one of us in knowing good and evil. Now, lest he reach out his hand and take also of the tree of life and eat, and live forever'—therefore the LORD God sent him out from the garden of Eden.”
“Through the middle of the street of the city; also, on either side of the river, the tree of life with its twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit each month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”
The tree of life, lost in Eden, is restored in the New Jerusalem.
Access to the tree of life was barred after the Fall. In eternity, it yields fruit monthly and its leaves heal the nations - full and abundant life forever.
Cherubim guarded the tree after Eden's fall (Genesis 3:24). In eternity, access is restored for all who are in Christ.
The 'healing of nations' in a perfect state may indicate ongoing sustenance rather than healing from disease.

1000 BC – 722 BC · 2 propheciesHis Second Coming & KingdomBattle of Armageddon
Awaiting Fulfillment“I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. And I will enter into judgment with them there... Let the nations stir themselves up and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.”

Battle of Armageddon
“I will gather all the nations and bring them down to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. And I will enter into judgment with them there... Let the nations stir themselves up and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.”
“And they assembled them at the place that in Hebrew is called Armageddon.”
The armies of the world will gather against Israel and be defeated by Christ.
Armageddon (Har Megiddo - 'Mountain of Megiddo') is in northern Israel. The Jezreel Valley has been the site of many historic battles.
Megiddo overlooks the Jezreel Valley, the only flat area large enough for massive armies in Israel.
Some see Armageddon as symbolic of final conflict between good and evil rather than a specific geographic battle.
His Second Coming & KingdomComes as Judge of Nations

“When the Son of man shall come in his glory... before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another.”
The Messiah will judge all nations.
Awaits future fulfillment at the final judgment.
Israel Falls
722 BC – 586 BC · 14 propheciesHis Second Coming & KingdomChrist Rules from Jerusalem

Christ Rules from Jerusalem
“It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains... and all the nations shall flow to it... For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”
“The Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.”
Christ will rule the world from Jerusalem, fulfilling the Davidic covenant.
Jesus will sit on David's throne in Jerusalem. Nations will come to learn God's ways. This fulfills promises to David of an eternal dynasty.
The Davidic covenant (2 Samuel 7) promised an eternal kingdom - partially fulfilled spiritually, fully in the millennium.
Amillennialists see Christ's current heavenly reign as fulfillment. Premillennialists await literal earthly reign.
His Second Coming & KingdomEstablishes Universal Peace

Establishes Universal Peace
“And he shall judge among the nations... they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks: nation shall not lift up sword against nation.”
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying.”
The Messiah's kingdom will bring universal peace.
Universal peace awaits the Messiah's kingdom.
His Second Coming & KingdomEternal Worship and Service
Awaiting Fulfillment“For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain. From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD.”

Eternal Worship and Service
“For as the new heavens and the new earth that I make shall remain before me, says the LORD, so shall your offspring and your name remain. From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD.”
“His servants will worship him. They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads. And night will be no more. They will need no light of lamp or sun, for the Lord God will be their light, and they will reign forever and ever.”
Believers will worship God and reign with Him forever in the eternal state.
Seeing God's face (beatific vision), bearing His name, reigning forever - the culmination of redemption. Activity continues but without sin or exhaustion.
In Old Testament, seeing God meant death (Exodus 33:20). In eternity, we see Him face to face.
Eternal life is not passive existence but active service, worship, and reign in God's presence and pleasure.
His Second Coming & KingdomKnowledge of God Covers Earth

Read the promise and its fulfillment →
Knowledge of God Covers Earth
“For the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”
“For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”
Universal knowledge of God will characterize the kingdom.
All will know God in the Messiah's kingdom.
His Second Coming & KingdomLake of Fire - Final Hell
Awaiting Fulfillment“And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”

Lake of Fire - Final Hell
“And they shall go out and look on the dead bodies of the men who have rebelled against me. For their worm shall not die, their fire shall not be quenched, and they shall be an abhorrence to all flesh.”
“Then Death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.”
The final destination of Satan, demons, and all unbelievers is the lake of fire (hell).
The lake of fire is distinct from Hades (intermediate state). It is the final, eternal state of the lost. Some hold to annihilationism, but 'eternal punishment' (Matthew 25:46) parallels 'eternal life.'
Jesus spoke more about hell than anyone in Scripture, emphasizing its reality.
Debates exist between eternal conscious torment, annihilationism, and universalism. Orthodox Christianity affirms eternal punishment.
His Second Coming & KingdomNature Restored
Awaiting Fulfillment“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid... They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain.”

Nature Restored
“The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid... They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain.”
“Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.”
Creation will be restored to harmony.
Nature itself will be transformed in the Messiah's kingdom.
His Second Coming & KingdomNew Heaven and New Earth
Awaiting Fulfillment“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.”
Read the promise and its fulfillment →
New Heaven and New Earth
“For behold, I create new heavens and a new earth, and the former things shall not be remembered or come into mind.”
“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more.”
God will create a completely new heaven and earth for eternity.
Debate exists whether this is renovation or new creation. The removal of the sea may be symbolic (chaos, separation) or literal. Everything is made new.
The current creation groans under the curse (Romans 8:22) and awaits liberation.
2 Peter 3:10-13 describes the elements burning - suggesting purification rather than complete annihilation.
His Second Coming & KingdomNew Jerusalem Descends
Awaiting Fulfillment“The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the LORD will be your everlasting light.”

“The sun shall be no more your light by day, nor for brightness shall the moon give you light; but the LORD will be your everlasting light, and your God will be your glory. Your sun shall no more go down, nor your moon withdraw itself; for the LORD will be your everlasting light.”
“And I saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband... having the glory of God, its radiance like a most rare jewel, like a jasper, clear as crystal.”
The New Jerusalem will descend from heaven as the eternal dwelling of God with His people.
The city is described as 1,400 miles cubed (or pyramid), with 12 gates, foundations named after apostles, streets of gold, and no temple because God Himself is there.
John's description combines elements of the Garden of Eden restored with urban imagery of a perfected city.
Whether dimensions are literal or symbolic of perfection, the emphasis is on God's presence and access for all His people.
His Second Coming & KingdomNo More Death or Tears

No More Death or Tears
“He will swallow up death in victory; and the Lord GOD will wipe away tears from off all faces.”
“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain.”
Death and suffering will be eliminated forever.
In the eternal state, death is abolished forever.

Rules from Jerusalem
“For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”

The Messiah will rule from Jerusalem.
Jerusalem will be the capital of the Messiah's kingdom.

Satan Bound
“The LORD shall punish the host of the high ones... they shall be gathered together, as prisoners are gathered in the pit, and shall be shut up in the prison.”
“And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years.”
Satan will be bound during the Messiah's reign.
Satan will be imprisoned during the millennial kingdom.
Amillennialists interpret this binding as present-age reality.
His Second Coming & KingdomSatan Bound 1,000 Years
Awaiting Fulfillment“On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished.”

Satan Bound 1,000 Years
“On that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven, in heaven, and the kings of the earth, on the earth. They will be gathered together as prisoners in a pit; they will be shut up in a prison, and after many days they will be punished.”
“And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, and threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended.”
Satan will be imprisoned for 1,000 years, unable to deceive the nations.
Premillennialists: future imprisonment. Amillennialists: Satan bound now by Christ's victory, limiting but not eliminating his activity.
Jesus spoke of binding the 'strong man' (Mark 3:27) at His first coming.
The degree of Satan's current binding/restriction is debated. A future complete binding would mean dramatically different world conditions.
His Second Coming & KingdomThe Millennial Kingdom
Awaiting Fulfillment“The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them... “The wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together; and a little child shall lead them... They shall not hurt or destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea.”
“They came to life and reigned with Christ for a thousand years... Blessed and holy is the one who shares in the first resurrection! Over such the second death has no power, but they will be priests of God and of Christ, and they will reign with him for a thousand years.”
Christ will reign on earth for 1,000 years in an era of peace and righteousness.
Premillennialists: literal 1,000-year reign after Christ's return. Amillennialists: symbolic of church age. Postmillennialists: world Christianized before Christ returns.
The early church was predominantly premillennial until Augustine popularized amillennialism.
The key debate is whether 'thousand years' is literal or symbolic. Revelation uses '1,000' to mean completeness or vastness.
His Second Coming & KingdomThe Rapture of the Church
Awaiting Fulfillment“Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead. Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until the fury has passed by.”

The Rapture of the Church
“Your dead shall live; their bodies shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For your dew is a dew of light, and the earth will give birth to the dead. Come, my people, enter your chambers, and shut your doors behind you; hide yourselves for a little while until the fury has passed by.”
“For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the voice of an archangel, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air.”
Believers will be 'caught up' (raptured) to meet Christ in the air.
Views on timing vary: Pre-Tribulation (before 7-year tribulation), Mid-Tribulation (at midpoint), Post-Tribulation (at end), or Pre-Wrath (before God's wrath but during tribulation).
The rapture doctrine was developed systematically in the 1800s, though elements appear in early church writings.
Greek 'harpazo' (caught up) became Latin 'rapturo' - the source of 'rapture.' Historic premillennialists, amillennialists, and postmillennialists often reject the pre-trib view.

144,000 Sealed Witnesses
“And the LORD said to him, 'Pass through the city, through Jerusalem, and put a mark on the foreheads of the men who sigh and groan over all the abominations that are committed in it.'”
“And I heard the number of the sealed, 144,000, sealed from every tribe of the sons of Israel.”
12,000 from each tribe of Israel will be sealed for protection and witness during the tribulation.
Dispensationalists see literal Jewish believers during tribulation. Others see the church symbolized by Israel's tribes (spiritual Israel).
The sealing echoes Passover protection and Ezekiel's vision of preservation.
Revelation 14 describes them as celibate male firstfruits, though this may be symbolic language for purity and devotion.
His Second Coming & KingdomGod Dwells with Humanity
Awaiting Fulfillment“My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”

God Dwells with Humanity
“My tabernacle also shall be with them: yea, I will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more.'”
God will dwell directly with humanity for eternity - no more separation, death, sorrow, or pain.
This reverses the curse of Genesis 3. Eden's fellowship is restored and exceeded. God's presence is the source of all blessing.
The tabernacle/temple were provisional dwelling places; in eternity, God's presence fills all.
The Greek 'skenoo' (dwell/tabernacle) echoes John 1:14 - the Word 'tabernacled' among us, pointing to permanent indwelling.
His Second Coming & KingdomMillennial Temple Built
Awaiting Fulfillment“In visions of God he brought me to the land of Israel, and set me down on a very high mountain, on which was a structure like a city to the south... 'Son of man, look with your eyes, and hear with your ears, and set your heart upon all that I shall show you, for you were brought here in order that I might show it to you.'”
“Behold, the man whose name is the Branch: for he shall branch out from his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD. It is he who shall build the temple of the LORD and shall bear royal honor.”
A glorious temple will be built in Jerusalem during the millennium, described in detail in Ezekiel 40-48.
Ezekiel describes a massive temple complex never yet built. Sacrifices mentioned are debated - memorial, not salvific. Some see this as symbolic of church/New Jerusalem.
No temple has matched Ezekiel's detailed specifications, including the miraculous river flowing from it.
The reinstitution of animal sacrifice is difficult for many; memorial sacrifices (like communion) is one explanation.
His Second Coming & KingdomRiver Flows from Temple
Awaiting Fulfillment“Then he brought me back to the door of the temple, and behold, water was issuing from below the threshold of the temple toward the east... This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, and enters the sea; when the water flows into the sea, the water will become fresh. This water flows toward the eastern region and goes down into the Arabah, and enters the sea; when the water flows into the sea, the water will become fresh. And wherever the river goes, every living creature that swarms will live.”
“On that day living waters shall flow out from Jerusalem, half of them to the eastern sea and half of them to the western sea. It shall continue in summer as in winter.”
A supernatural river will flow from the millennial temple, bringing life wherever it goes.
The river flows east to the Dead Sea, healing its waters. Fish will abound. Trees along the bank will produce monthly fruit for healing of nations.
The Dead Sea is currently one of the most saline bodies of water on earth, supporting no fish.
John's vision in Revelation 22 also includes a river from God's throne, possibly paralleling or fulfilling this prophecy.

A river of life will flow from God's throne.
The new Jerusalem will have a river of life.
His Second Coming & KingdomSatan's Final Rebellion
Awaiting Fulfillment“Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.”

“Son of man, set your face toward Gog, of the land of Magog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal, and prophesy against him and say, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I am against you, O Gog, chief prince of Meshech and Tubal.”
“And when the thousand years are ended, Satan will be released from his prison and will come out to deceive the nations that are at the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them for battle... And fire came down from heaven and consumed them.”
After the millennium, Satan will be released briefly and lead one final rebellion before being destroyed forever.
Despite 1,000 years of perfect rule, some will rebel when given the chance. This proves the depravity of the human heart apart from God's grace.
Ezekiel's Gog/Magog prophecy may have dual fulfillment - before and after the millennium.
This brief rebellion demonstrates that even perfect environment cannot change the human heart - salvation is by grace alone.

Access to the Tree of Life will be restored.
What was lost in Eden will be restored in the new creation.

Abomination of Desolation
“Forces from him shall appear and profane the temple and fortress, and shall take away the regular burnt offering. And they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.”
“So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains.”
A final desecration of the temple will signal the beginning of the worst tribulation.
Antiochus Epiphanes fulfilled Daniel's prophecy in 167 BC. Jesus indicated another fulfillment was still future. Some see Titus (70 AD), others a future Antichrist in a rebuilt temple.
Antiochus erected a statue of Zeus and sacrificed pigs in the temple. The question is whether Jesus pointed to another fulfillment.
The phrase 'let the reader understand' suggests Matthew's readers needed to discern the application.

Believers will reign with Christ.
Saints will share in Christ's reign.

“I beheld then because of the voice of the great words which the horn spake: I beheld even till the beast was slain.”
“And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming.”
The Messiah will destroy the Antichrist at his coming.
The 'man of lawlessness' will be destroyed at Christ's return.
His Second Coming & KingdomGreat White Throne Judgment
Awaiting Fulfillment“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames... the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.”

Great White Throne Judgment
“As I looked, thrones were placed, and the Ancient of Days took his seat; his clothing was white as snow, and the hair of his head like pure wool; his throne was fiery flames... the court sat in judgment, and the books were opened.”
“Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. From his presence earth and sky fled away, and no place was found for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened.”
All unbelievers will stand before God's throne for final judgment.
This judgment is for unbelievers whose names are not in the Book of Life. Believers were judged at the Bema seat (rewards), not here (condemnation).
Ancient courts kept records of deeds; these 'books' contain everyone's works.
The 'Book of Life' determines destiny; other books determine degrees of punishment. Believers' sins were already judged at the cross.

“And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion.”
“The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever.”
The Messiah's reign will be eternal.
Jesus reigns now spiritually; physical reign awaits his return.
Premillennialists see a literal 1000-year reign before the eternal state.
His Second Coming & KingdomResurrection of Old Testament Saints

Resurrection of Old Testament Saints
“And many of those who sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
“Do not marvel at this, for an hour is coming when all who are in the tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who have done good to the resurrection of life, and those who have done evil to the resurrection of judgment.”
All the dead will be resurrected for judgment - some to life, some to condemnation.
Premillennialists see multiple resurrections (saints at rapture, tribulation martyrs, OT saints). Amillennialists see one general resurrection at Christ's return.
Resurrection was a distinctively Jewish belief rejected by Greeks and Sadducees.
The Pharisees affirmed resurrection (Acts 23:8). The timing and stages of resurrection are debated among eschatological frameworks.
His Second Coming & KingdomThe Antichrist Revealed
Awaiting Fulfillment“And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”

The Antichrist Revealed
“And he shall make a strong covenant with many for one week, and for half of the week he shall put an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall come one who makes desolate, until the decreed end is poured out on the desolator.”
“Let no one deceive you in any way. For that day will not come, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself against every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, proclaiming himself to be God.”
A final world ruler will arise who opposes God and demands worship.
Also called 'man of sin,' 'son of perdition,' 'the beast.' Will make and break a covenant with Israel, demand worship, and be destroyed at Christ's return.
Various figures have been identified as Antichrist throughout history (Nero, various popes, Hitler).
The prefix 'anti' means both 'against' and 'instead of' - the Antichrist opposes Christ while presenting himself as a substitute messiah.
His Second Coming & KingdomThe Dead Raised

The Dead Raised
“And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt.”
“The hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life.”
The Messiah will raise the dead for judgment.
All will be resurrected for final judgment.
His Second Coming & KingdomThe Great Tribulation
Awaiting Fulfillment“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.”

The Great Tribulation
“At that time shall arise Michael, the great prince who has charge of your people. And there shall be a time of trouble, such as never has been since there was a nation till that time. But at that time your people shall be delivered, everyone whose name shall be found written in the book.”
“For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be.”
A period of unprecedented trouble will come upon the world before Christ's return.
Dispensationalists see a literal 7-year tribulation (Daniel's 70th week). Preterists see this fulfilled in 70 AD. Historicists see ongoing church persecution.
Jesus described this in the Olivet Discourse (Matthew 24-25).
The debate centers on whether tribulation language is hyperbolic or describes a unique future period. Many link to Daniel 9:27's 'one week.'

Visible Return in the Clouds
“I saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man came with the clouds of heaven.”
“Behold, he cometh with clouds; and every eye shall see him, and they also which pierced him.”
The Messiah will return visibly in the clouds.
Awaits future fulfillment at the Second Coming.
His Second Coming & KingdomWorld Government Under Antichrist

World Government Under Antichrist
“Thus he said: 'As for the fourth beast, there shall be a fourth kingdom on earth, which shall be different from all the kingdoms, and it shall devour the whole earth, and trample it down, and break it to pieces.'”
“Also it was allowed to make war on the saints and to conquer them. And authority was given it over every tribe and people and language and nation, and all who dwell on earth will worship it.”
The Antichrist will establish a global government with authority over all nations.
Some see precursors in globalization, UN, EU, or other international bodies. Full fulfillment awaits the final world ruler.
No ruler has ever achieved true global domination, though many have tried.
The 'fourth beast' is generally identified with Rome, suggesting the final empire emerges from Roman/Western civilization.
His Second Coming & KingdomChrist Returns to Mount of Olives
Awaiting Fulfillment“On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.”

Christ Returns to Mount of Olives
“On that day his feet shall stand on the Mount of Olives that lies before Jerusalem on the east, and the Mount of Olives shall be split in two from east to west by a very wide valley, so that one half of the Mount shall move northward, and the other half southward.”
“This Jesus, who was taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven. Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet.”
Christ will return to the exact location from which He ascended - the Mount of Olives.
The Mount of Olives east of Jerusalem will split, creating a valley for escape. A geological fault line runs through this mountain.
Jesus ascended from the Mount of Olives (Acts 1) and will return there.
The Jordan Rift Valley fault system does run through this area, making the prophecy geologically plausible.

Comes with His Saints
“And the LORD my God shall come, and all the saints with thee.”
“To the end he may stablish your hearts unblameable in holiness before God, even our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all his saints.”
The Messiah will return accompanied by his saints.
Believers will accompany Christ at his return.
His Second Coming & KingdomIsrael Mourns the Pierced One
Awaiting Fulfillment“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.”

Israel Mourns the Pierced One
“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.”
“And in this way all Israel will be saved, as it is written, 'The Deliverer will come from Zion, he will banish ungodliness from Jacob.'”
Israel will recognize Jesus as Messiah and mourn their rejection of Him.
At Christ's return, Israel will see the one they (nationally) rejected and experience mass salvation. The Spirit of grace will bring repentance.
This builds on the partial blindness of Israel until the 'fullness of the Gentiles' comes in (Romans 11:25).
Replacement theology denies a future for ethnic Israel. Traditional Jewish and dispensational Christian views affirm national Israel's future restoration.
His Second Coming & KingdomIsrael Recognizes Him

Israel Recognizes Him
“They shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son.”
“And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Sion the Deliverer.”
Israel will recognize the pierced Messiah and mourn.
A future national repentance of Israel is prophesied.
Views differ on timing and nature of Israel's salvation.
His Second Coming & KingdomNations Attack Jerusalem
Awaiting Fulfillment“Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah. On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it.”

On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it.”
“And I saw the beast and the kings of the earth with their armies gathered to make war against him who was sitting on the horse and against his army.”
All nations will unite to attack Jerusalem before Christ's return.
Jerusalem will become a 'burdensome stone' that no nation can successfully lift. This final siege triggers Christ's return.
Jerusalem has been besieged and conquered over 40 times in history.
Modern focus on Jerusalem in international politics (UN resolutions, embassy controversies) is seen by some as stage-setting.
His Second Coming & KingdomNations Keep Feast of Tabernacles
Awaiting Fulfillment“Then everyone who survives of all the nations that have come against Jerusalem shall go up year after year to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, and to keep the Feast of Booths. And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, there will be no rain on them.”

And if any of the families of the earth do not go up to Jerusalem to worship the King, the LORD of hosts, there will be no rain on them.”
“From new moon to new moon, and from Sabbath to Sabbath, all flesh shall come to worship before me, declares the LORD.”
All nations will be required to send representatives to Jerusalem to worship annually.
The Feast of Tabernacles celebrates God dwelling with His people - perfectly appropriate for the Messianic age. Refusal brings drought judgment.
Tabernacles was the most joyful of Israel's feasts, anticipating final harvest and God's presence.
This implies mortal nations continuing during the millennium alongside resurrected saints - a complex eschatological scenario.

No More Curse
“And it shall be inhabited, for there shall never again be a decree of utter destruction. Jerusalem shall dwell in security.”
“No longer will there be anything accursed, but the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and his servants will worship him.”
The curse of Genesis 3 will be completely removed forever.
Work, creation, relationships - all freed from the effects of sin. The tree of life is accessible again (Rev 22:2). Death and decay are eliminated.
The curse affected all creation: ground, animals, childbirth, work, relationships, and brought death.
This is the ultimate answer to Romans 8:20-22 - creation's liberation from bondage to corruption.

Returns to Mount of Olives
“And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east.”
“This same Jesus... shall so come in like manner... Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet.”
The Messiah will return to the Mount of Olives.
Jesus will return to the exact location from which he ascended.

Two Witnesses in Jerusalem
“Then I said to him, 'What are these two olive trees on the right and the left of the lampstand?'... He said, 'These are the two anointed ones who stand by the Lord of the whole earth.'”
“And I will grant authority to my two witnesses, and they will prophesy for 1,260 days, clothed in sackcloth... And if anyone would harm them, fire pours from their mouth and consumes their foes. They have the power to shut the sky, that no rain may fall... and they have power over the waters to turn them into blood.”
Two prophets will minister in Jerusalem for 3.5 years with supernatural powers.
Often identified as Moses and Elijah (based on their powers), or Enoch and Elijah (who never died), or symbolic of the church's witness.
Their powers mirror Moses (plagues) and Elijah (drought), both of whom appeared at the Transfiguration.
They will be killed, resurrected after 3.5 days, and ascend to heaven - paralleling Christ's ministry.
Spanning 2100 BC to 100 AD of biblical history.
