When Naomi heard in Moab

on Ruth 1:6-7

What turns her homeward is a report that "the LORD had attended to His people by providing them with food", so the house of bread has bread again. This is the only act of God the chapter reports directly, and it is done offstage in a country she is not in. Everything else in the book happens through ordinary people keeping faith.

The road is called the way back for all three women, though only Naomi had ever lived in Judah. For her two daughters-in-law the road back leads to a land they have never seen. Naomi has not yet told them to return.

By this we see both that Naomi, as became an Israelite, had been very kind and obliging to them and had won their love, in which she is an example to all mothers-in-law, and that Orpah and Ruth had a just sense of her kindness, for they were willing to return it thus far.
