And she conceived and bare a son,.... Through the goodness of God unto her, and for which she was greatly thankful: and said, God hath taken away my reproach; the reproach of barrenness with which she was reproached among her neighbours; and perhaps by her sister Leah, and indeed it was a general reproach in those times; and especially, it was the more grievous to good women in the family of Abraham, because they were not the means of multiplying his seed according to the promise, and could have no hope of the Messiah springing from them.

God remembered Rachel

on Genesis 30:22-23

God remembered Rachel, the same phrase Genesis uses of Noah at 8:1 when the waters went down, which marks God acting on a promise. The words open the exodus, where God remembers His covenant and hears the groaning in Egypt. Rachel calls the birth the taking away of her shame.

God has taken away my shame

John Gill explains the shame as the common reproach of barrenness, sharpened in Abraham's family. A barren wife there could add nothing to the seed God had promised to multiply, and had no hope of the Messiah coming from her. Sarah and Rebekah had both waited years to bear.
