on Ezekiel 48:1-7

Seven tribes receive parallel strips, beginning “At the northern frontier” with Dan and ending with Judah, whose portion borders the holy portion. In Joshua the tribes received land by lot within borders shaped by rivers and hills. Here the portions are straight bands around a fixed center.

Judah's strip borders the holy portion on the north. In Joshua 15 Judah held the south of the land, and Jerusalem stood on its border with Benjamin. Here Judah lies north of the center and Benjamin south, reversing their old positions.

(Chapter 48, verses 1 onwards) And these are the names of the tribes: starting from the northern borders, near the path of Ethalon that goes to Emath, Atrium, Enon, the boundary of Damascus to the north of Emath, and it will have the eastern boundary, the sea. Dan is one tribe. And from the boundary of Dan to the eastern boundary, Asher is one tribe. And beyond the boundary of Asher to the eastern boundary, Nephthali is one tribe. And beyond the boundary of Nephthali to the eastern boundary, Manasseh is one tribe.

Such who "confess" the Lord before men, and "praise" his name for all blessings, temporal and spiritual, they receive from him: these seven tribes already mentioned, as they lay contiguous to each other, and had portions and inheritances alike assigned to them; so they were all of them to the north of the sanctuary and city after mentioned.
