(Verse 17.) The suburbs of the city on the north side shall be two hundred and fifty cubits in length, on the south side two hundred and fifty cubits in length, on the east side two hundred and fifty cubits in length, and on the west side two hundred and fifty cubits in length. As for the suburbs, which are called "Magras" in Hebrew, they have again transferred the distance of seventy times seventy cubits, that is, a space.

Beside the holy portion lies ground “for common use by the city, for houses, and for pastureland”, with the city “in the center of it”. Common use stands next to consecrated use, the same distinction chapter 42 drew between the priests' garments and the outer court.

The pastureland is an open belt of 250 cubits on every side, like the fifty cubits around the sanctuary in 45:2. Jerome records the Hebrew word as magras. Levitical towns had the same kind of pastureland in Numbers 35:2 to 5.

The five thousand rods, apportioned to the city out of the twenty-five thousand square, are to be laid off in a square of four thousand five hundred, with the two hundred fifty all around for suburbs. profane--that is, not strictly sacred as the sacerdotal portions, but applied to secular uses.
The city being 4500 reeds square, 250 reeds are marked off north, south, east, west from the city land.
