Commentary Critical and Explanatory on the Whole Bible (1871)

The five thousand rods, apportioned to the city out of the twenty-five thousand square, are to be laid off in a square of four thousand five hundred, with the two hundred fifty all around for suburbs. profane--that is, not strictly sacred as the sacerdotal portions, but applied to secular uses.

Beside the holy portion lies ground “for common use by the city, for houses, and for pastureland”, with the city “in the center of it”. Common use stands next to consecrated use, the same distinction chapter 42 drew between the priests' garments and the outer court.

4,500 cubits on the north side

The city is a square of 4,500 cubits, and with the 250 cubits of pastureland it fills 5,000 cubits, the width of its strip. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown work out this fit. John Wesley reckons the perimeter at eighteen thousand cubits, the figure verse 35 gives.
