Chapter 39 opens with the summons that opened the oracle before it, prophesy against Gog, so the sentence stands before a single blow falls. Fairbairn notes the book's habit of stating a judgment and then restating it from another angle, as these two chapters do.

The Hebrew verb here is rare, and translators have rendered it in several ways. The King James reads leave but the sixth part of thee, and Clarke reports marginal readings of six plagues or a hook of six teeth. The Berean reading fits the hooks of 38:4.
