A city in the neighborhood was to receive the name Hamonah, "multitude," to commemorate the overthrow of the multitudes of the foe [HENDERSON]. The multitude of the slain shall give a name to the city of Jerusalem after the land shall have been cleansed [GROTIUS].

After the seven months, men employed to pass through the land search for any exposed bone and set a pillar beside it for the gravediggers. A city takes the multitude's name, Hamonah. The older commentators set this search beside the exact measuring of the sanctuary in the chapters ahead.

Hamonah means multitude, the same word that names the Valley of Hamon-gog. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown report two views: Henderson takes it as a nearby town named to recall the defeat. Grotius takes it as a new name for Jerusalem.
