In the open country only the man dies. The statute says “she has committed no sin worthy of death”, for “there was no one to save her”. The lack of witnesses is read in her favour.

Clarke explains the case as like murder: a woman's honor was counted as precious as her life. The man who attacks her would die as a murderer.
