St. Jerome, Commentary on Daniel, CHAPTER SIX · Written before 420.

Verse 11. "Those men, therefore, conducted an inquisitive search and discovered Daniel in prayer and making supplication unto his God." From this passage we learn that we are not to expose ourselves rashly to danger, but so far as it lies in our power, we are to avoid the plots of our enemies. And so in Daniel's case, he did not contravene the king's authority in a public square or out in the street, but rather in a private place, in order that he might not neglect the commands of the one true God Almighty.

After the decree Daniel keeps his windows “opened toward Jerusalem”. He keeps his old habit and changes nothing. Praying toward Jerusalem answers Solomon's prayer at 1 Kings 8:48 that exiles would pray toward the land and the house built for God's name.

John Gill thought the men knew the times and place where Daniel prayed and came as a group to catch him. Jerome noted that Daniel prayed in his own house, in private. He drew the lesson that believers should avoid needless danger where they can.
