Take every man a beam - Trees were rare in most parts of Palestine, but plentiful in the Jordan Valley. Jericho was known in early times as “the city of palms” Deu 34:3; Jdg 1:16.

The sons of the prophets tell Elisha that “the place where we meet with you is too small for us”. They ask his leave before building by the Jordan, and his answer is one word, “Go”. Whoever comes to Elisha in this chapter finds him attending to it.

Albert Barnes notes that trees were scarce across most of Palestine and plentiful in the Jordan Valley. Barnes points to Jericho, known from early times as the city of palms at Deuteronomy 34:3 and Judges 1:16. Each man was to cut his own log.
