By the way that he came - i. e., through the low country of the Shephelah, thus avoiding not only Jerusalem, but even Judaea.

on 2 Kings 19:32-33
The oracle promises a siege that never happens: he will not "shoot an arrow into it". Sennacherib's Taylor Prism boasts of shutting Hezekiah up and never claims the city fell. That silence fits the oracle as evidence short of proof, since an inscription keeps silent about a failure.

Barnes traces the way he came through the Shephelah, the low hill country west of Judah, so the king goes back far from the city. Clarke notes that he goes back alone, his camp struck down at verse 35. Clarke held him kept for a more shameful death.

So determined was this invader to conquer Judah and the neighboring countries (Isa 10:7), that nothing but a divine interposition could have saved Jerusalem.
By the way that he came - Though his army shall not return, yet he shall return to Assyria; for because of his blasphemy he is reserved for a more ignominious death.
