8 notes on this verseAnd Hezekiah rejoiced - Both he and the people rejoiced that God had prepared their hearts to bring about so great a reformation in so short a time; for, it is added, the thing was done suddenly. The king’s example and influence were here, under God, the grand spring of all those mighty and effectual movements. What amazing power and influence has God lodged with kings! They can sway a whole empire nearly as they please; and when they declare themselves in behalf of religion, they have the people uniformly on their side.

Verse 35 closes the account of the day. Verse 36 gives two causes for the joy, “what God had prepared for the people” and that “everything had been accomplished so quickly”. Wesley sets the speed of the change beside a people who had followed Ahaz's idolatry only a generation before.

Gill notes that king and people rejoiced together, and the verse gives God the credit for the readiness the people showed. The whole work took little more than two weeks after years of shut doors under Ahaz. The Passover of 30:26 brings the greatest joy Jerusalem had known since Solomon.

This change, which God wrought on their minds, did very much expedite and facilitate the work. Let magistrates and ministers do their part towards the reforming of a land, and ascribe to him the glory of what is done, especially when it is done suddenly and is a pleasing surprise.
