The family of Matri - This name occurs nowhere else among the families of Benjamin, or in the genealogy of Saul. (See 1Sa 9:1 note.)

The lot narrows and discloses a choice God had made known to Samuel at 9:15-17. When Saul is missing, they inquire and the LORD answers, “he has hidden himself among the baggage”. It is the first inquiry answered in these two books, and Saul's last inquiry at 28:6 meets silence.

Albert Barnes notes that the clan of Matri appears only here among the clans of Benjamin. Matthew Henry recalls that Jacob had given the rule to Judah, so a king from the tribe of Benjamin would soon give way. Adam Clarke puts Saul's hiding down to modesty or fear.

But since he himself had already known the king by the Lord's revelation, and had anointed him as ruler at His command, why is it that he is still sought out as one to be chosen through tribes and families? But the king had been found by the prophet alone. Therefore, the one already found is sought, so that he who had not been found by the people might be found by them.

As it was of the utmost importance that the appointment should be under the divine direction and control, the determination was made by the miraculous lot, tribes, families, and individuals being successively passed until Saul was found.
