A second census follows for “the remaining descendants of Levi”. Albert Barnes counts twenty-five family heads here against the twenty-four priestly courses, and the text leaves the difference unexplained. Verse 31 restates the method, since these houses also “cast lots in the presence of King David”.

The descendants of Merari from Jaaziah
Jaaziah's line within Merari gives Shoham, Zaccur and Ibri. Albert Barnes, on verse 26, takes Beno here as his son and renders the verse as Merari's sons by Jaaziah his son. Barnes counts Jaaziah as a third Merarite branch beside Mahli and Mushi.
