A second census follows for “the remaining descendants of Levi”. Albert Barnes counts twenty-five family heads here against the twenty-four priestly courses, and the text leaves the difference unexplained. Verse 31 restates the method, since these houses also “cast lots in the presence of King David”.

Eleazar, of the house of Mahli, had no sons. His daughters married their cousins, the sons of Kish, as 1 Chronicles 23:22 records. Adam Clarke ties this to the law for Zelophehad's daughters in Numbers 27 and 36.
