The first lot fell to Jehoiarib

on 1 Chronicles 24:7-13

The lot gives “the eighth to Abijah”, and Luke 1:5 names Zechariah as a priest of the division of Abijah. Zechariah was serving his division's turn in the temple when Gabriel met him, so this roster dates the opening scene of the New Testament.

Jeshua draws the ninth lot and Shecaniah the tenth. Matthew Henry, on verse 5, calls the lot an appeal to God, to be used with reverence and sincerity by those who cast it.
