Romans 11:1-4

Hath God cast away his people? God forbid: Paul opens the chapter by asking replacement theology's exact question and answering it with his strongest negative, and then with himself, for I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin, a living Israelite inside the church being exhibit one against the casting away. God hath not cast away his people which he foreknew is the thesis the whole chapter defends, and the Elijah narrative supplies the pattern: the prophet's intercession against Israel, I am left alone, answered by the divine census he could not see, I have reserved to myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal. The bench draws the standing lesson, that the visible apostasy of a generation has never yet emptied God's hidden reserve, and the exposition lets the chapter's own architecture stand: the question, the negative, the man, the remnant.

Romans 11:5-6

Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace: the Elijah pattern is declared current, a believing Israel within Israel existing in Paul's own day as in Ahab's, and the remnant thread that ran through Isaiah and the prophets here receives its New Testament name. Verse 6 guards the remnant's ground with an exclusion argued in both directions, if by grace, then no more of works, otherwise grace is no more grace: the two principles cannot mix without each destroying the other's nature, and the bench across the eras states it as the epistle's whole doctrine in miniature. The remnant is not the faithful residue who earned retention; it is the election of grace, and the exposition keeps Paul's order.

Romans 11:7-10

Israel hath not obtained that which he seeketh for; but the election hath obtained it, and the rest were blinded: the nation pursuing righteousness by works missed it, the remnant chosen by grace received it, and the hardening of the rest is stated in Scripture's own words before Paul will state its limits. The catena joins Deuteronomy 29:4 with Isaiah 29:10, the spirit of slumber, eyes that see not, unto this day, and David's imprecation from Psalm 69, their table made a snare, the psalm the New Testament applies to the betrayal and the passion more than any other. The bench is careful here exactly where the chapter is: the blindness is judicial, real, and, as verse 25 will insist, partial and temporary, and no note treats these verses as the chapter's last word, because Paul does not.

Romans 11:11-12

Have they stumbled that they should fall? God forbid: the second me genoito of the chapter refuses the reading in which Israel's stumble is terminal, and Paul states the actual economy, through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles, for to provoke them to jealousy, Deuteronomy 32:21's provocation now running in reverse. Verse 12 then argues from the lesser to the greater in the chapter's characteristic form: if the fall of them be the riches of the world, how much more their fulness, where the word is pleroma, the same word verse 25 will use of the Gentiles. The bench notes what the argument requires, a fulness of Israel still future when Paul wrote, a category replacement theology has no shelf for, and the exposition states it as the verse's own logic.

Romans 11:13-16

I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I magnify mine office: the chapter turns to address the grafted-in directly, and Paul magnifies his Gentile mission with a stated Jewish aim, if by any means I may provoke to emulation them which are my flesh, and might save some of them. Verse 15 raises the stakes of verse 12: if the casting away of them be the reconciling of the world, what shall the receiving of them be, but life from the dead? The receiving, proslempsis, is future in Paul's grammar, and the bench divides only over how literally life from the dead reaches, resurrection itself or worldwide quickening, both readings named. Verse 16 lays the two figures the allegory will build on, the firstfruit and the lump, the root and the branches, the patriarchal root making the national branches holy in standing, which is the verse's whole argument for their future.

Romans 11:17-18

Thou, being a wild olive tree, wert graffed in among them: the preposition carries the doctrine, among the natural branches, not in place of the tree, and the Gentile believer partakes of the root and fatness of an olive tree he did not plant. The tree is the covenant stock of the patriarchs; the root bears the branches and not the reverse, and verse 18's command is the site's own charge against every supersessionist boast: Boast not against the branches. But if thou boast, thou bearest not the root, but the root thee. The bench notes the horticultural surprise Paul builds on, wild scions grafted into cultivated stock being contrary to practice, exactly as verse 24 will say, grace working against nature; the exposition keeps the figure's direction, Gentiles brought into Israel's own tree, never a new tree planted on the old one's grave.

Romans 11:19-22

Thou wilt say then, The branches were broken off, that I might be graffed in: Paul voices the Gentile boast in order to grant its half-truth and break its pride, well, because of unbelief they were broken off, and thou standest by faith, standing and severance both turning on faith and neither on merit. Be not highminded, but fear, for if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee: the warning runs to the grafted branch at full strength. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: verse 22 holds both attributes in one gaze, severity on them which fell, goodness toward thee, if thou continue, otherwise thou also shalt be cut off; the bench reads the continuance clause corporately of the Gentile body's standing in the tree as well as personally, the readings named side by side, and the founder's own security anchor (John 10:28-29) stands with the chapter's aim, which is not to unsettle the believer but to slay the boast.

Romans 11:23-24

And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be graffed in: for God is able to graff them in again: the broken branches are not burned branches, and the chapter rests Israel's future on nothing in Israel but on the ability of God. Verse 24 completes the how-much-more: if the wild scion was grafted contrary to nature into the good olive tree, how much more shall these, which be the natural branches, be graffed into their own olive tree, their own, the possessive Paul chooses. The bench states the plain force: the regrafting of Israel is easier in the figure's own terms than the Gentile grafting already accomplished, so no reader may treat it as unlikely, and the exposition lets the argument carry the site's confession that God has a future for the natural branches.

Romans 11:25-27

I would not that ye should be ignorant of this mystery, lest ye should be wise in your own conceits: the disclosure is aimed at Gentile conceit, and its content has three measured clauses, blindness in part is happened to Israel, partial, not total; until the fulness of the Gentiles be come in, temporary, not final; and so all Israel shall be saved. The site teaches the plain reading as its own: Israel in verse 25 is national Israel, and all Israel in verse 26 is the same nation at the appointed turn, saved in the way the sentence has just described, when the Deliverer out of Sion turns away ungodliness from Jacob, Isaiah 59:20 with 27:9, the covenant clause, when I shall take away their sins. The reading that makes all Israel the church must give the word Israel two different referents inside one sentence, and the note says so plainly per the Presentation Doctrine; the elect-remnant-only reading fares little better against the chapter's until. Salvation remains in Christ alone, the Deliverer himself, and the exposition holds that line with the founder's own ruling: God has a plan for Israel, and Judaism is fulfilled in Christ.

Romans 11:28-29

As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sakes: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes: Paul states Israel's present double standing in one sentence, opposition to the gospel in the present economy, and covenant belovedness that has not lapsed, and the exposition keeps both clauses at full strength since dropping either produces a heresy, the first dropped yielding a gospel Israel does not need, the second dropped yielding the replacement theology this chapter exists to forbid. Verse 29 grounds the belovedness in the character of God: for the gifts and calling of God are without repentance, ametameleta, not subject to His change of mind. The bench sets the verse beside the sun-and-moon guarantee of Jeremiah 31:35-37 as the two great charters of Israel's irrevocable calling, and the site's confession stands on both.

Romans 11:30-32

For as ye in times past have not believed God, yet have now obtained mercy through their unbelief: the symmetry runs both directions, Gentile disobedience answered by mercy, Israel's present disobedience ordered so that through your mercy they also may obtain mercy, the Gentile church made an instrument of Israel's recovery rather than its replacement. Verse 32 states the whole economy in a sentence: God hath concluded them all in unbelief, that he might have mercy upon all, synekleisen, shut up together as in one prison, that mercy might be the one door out for Jew and Gentile alike. The bench guards the verse's scope as Paul's argument does, all meaning both great classes of mankind, and the exposition notes that the chapter's engineering has run entirely toward mercy, which is why it can end in doxology.

Romans 11:33-36

O the depth of the riches: O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God: the argument of eleven chapters ends not in a diagram but in a doxology, and the bench has always read the placement as the exposition's own lesson, that the doctrines of election, hardening, and Israel's future end rightly in worship or they have been handled wrongly. The two questions are Isaiah 40:13 and Job 41:11, who hath known the mind of the Lord, who hath first given to him, no counsellor and no creditor, and the last verse gives the reason in three prepositions: of him, and through him, and to him, are all things, source, channel, and end. To whom be glory for ever, Amen closes the doctrinal half of the epistle; the therefore of 12:1 will build the whole Christian life on the mercies just traced.
