Revelation 22:1-2

The angel shows John a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb, the same throne named through Revelation now the river's own source, and Ezekiel's temple vision of a river flowing from the sanctuary (Ezekiel 47:1-12) is answered and exceeded. On either side stands the tree of life, unseen since Eden's gate was shut against it (Genesis 3:24), now bearing twelve manner of fruits every month, one harvest for every month of the year, with never a season the tree stands empty. Its leaves are for the healing of the nations, the same nations who walked in the city's light at 21:24, and the tree the overcomer was promised at 2:7 stands open at last.

Revelation 22:3-4

There shall be no more curse answers Genesis 3:17 directly, the ground's own curse and the labor, sweat, and death it brought lifted at last from the world the throne of God and of the Lamb now fills. His servants shall serve him, the word for priestly service, so that what began as Adam's gardening in Eden becomes the redeemed family's priestly work in the city. They shall see his face, the request Moses was refused (Exodus 33:20) now granted without danger, and his name written on their foreheads answers the beast's own mark of chapter 13 with the opposite ownership.

Revelation 22:5

Night, candle, and sun are all named and set aside, for the Lord God giveth them light, the promise of 21:23 restated so the reader cannot miss it twice. They shall reign for ever and ever cashes the promise made to the overcomer at 2:26 and 3:21 in its final form, no longer a thousand years but a reign without end, the millennial kingdom of chapter 20 opening into the eternal state rather than closing it. What began as a promise to seven struggling churches ends as an unending throne shared with every overcomer.

Revelation 22:6

faithful and true: The angel affirms the vision with the same double word Christ used of himself at 19:11, these sayings are faithful and true, and names their source as the Lord God of the holy prophets, the God who spoke through Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel now sealing their fulfillment in his own book. The things which must shortly be done repeats the opening word of 1:1, tying the last chapter back to the first and framing the whole revelation as one continuous disclosure rather than loose visions.

Revelation 22:7

Behold, I come quickly is the third of the book's five come quickly sayings (1:7, 3:11, 22:7, 22:12, 22:20), and here it carries its own beatitude, blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book, the book's seventh and final blessing on the reader who does more than read it. Coming quickly is read two ways with holders, soon after the visions begin their sequence, or suddenly and without warning whenever it comes, and both readings keep the church watching rather than calculating a date.

Revelation 22:8-9

I fell down to worship: John, who has seen more of heaven than any other man alive, still falls down to worship before the angel's feet, and the angel refuses him exactly as another angel refused him at 19:10, the same words in both places, worship God. The angel names himself thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, placing himself in the same rank as John rather than above him, the book's own teaching against creature worship and angel veneration stated twice for emphasis. No prayer, veneration, or worship belongs to any angel or any saint; it belongs to God alone.

Revelation 22:10

Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book reverses Daniel's own instruction to seal up his vision till the time of the end (Daniel 12:4), and the difference marks the two books' distance from their fulfillment: Daniel's word waited centuries for its unsealing, John's stands open because the time is at hand. What Daniel closed, Revelation leaves open for every generation of the church to read.

Revelation 22:11

He that is unjust, let him be unjust still repeats the same verb four times over two contrasting pairs, the unjust and the filthy set against the righteous and the holy, and the tense describes a condition fixed rather than a command given. Once the book's visions reach their end, character has hardened past the point of change, the same solemn note struck when the door was shut against the foolish virgins (Matthew 25:10); what a life becomes before the end is what it remains after it.

Revelation 22:12-13

my reward is with me: Behold, I come quickly repeats a fourth time, now paired with my reward is with me, to give every man according as his work shall be, the same standard the books of works applied at the great white throne (20:12-13) now spoken by the judge himself before he arrives. I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last gathers every self naming of the book, 1:8, 1:17, and 21:6, into one final claim, the deity Christ has worn openly since chapter 1 stated once more before the book closes.

Revelation 22:14-15

Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life reads the Textus Receptus behind the King James Version; a number of early Greek manuscripts read instead blessed are they that wash their robes, a difference of one Greek verb for another that sound alike, and both readings are held by their own textual witnesses and named here as a genuine variant. Whichever text is followed, the sense agrees with the whole book, obedience flowing from a robe already washed in the Lamb's blood (7:14), while outside are dogs, sorcerers, whoremongers, murderers, idolaters, and whosoever loveth and maketh a lie, the same list that barred the city's gate at 21:8 and 21:27.

Revelation 22:16

I Jesus have sent mine angel names the speaker plainly after twenty one chapters of vision, breaking the pattern where an angel or the Spirit has spoken. I am the root and the offspring of David holds together his deity and his humanity in one line, root before David as his Creator, offspring after David as his son, and the bright and morning star answers his own promise at 2:28 and points back to Balaam's star out of Jacob (Numbers 24:17), the sign of his first coming named again as the sign of his return.

Revelation 22:17

The Spirit and the bride say, Come answers the book's own theme verse at 1:7, the church now joining heaven's own invitation rather than only awaiting it, the same word repeated four times in one verse, to the returning Christ, to the reader who hears, to the one who thirsts, and to whosoever will. The water of life offered freely here is the same fountain promised at 21:6 and the same water Christ offered the woman at the well (John 4:14), the whole book's evangelistic heart gathered into its next to last word.

Revelation 22:18-19

The warning against adding or taking away echoes Moses' own charge over the law at Deuteronomy 4:2 and Solomon's over wisdom at Proverbs 30:6, and here it is spoken first of this book's own words, the plagues and visions John has just recorded. Add unto these things brings the plagues written in the book upon the offender, and take away from the words brings the loss of his part in the tree of life and the holy city, the same city just described in such detail. The warning guards the prophecy's own text as it stood in John's hand; it is not a verdict on later translation or on the discipline of textual criticism, which the exposition keeps distinct from the sin the verse names.

Revelation 22:20

He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly closes the book's fifth and final come quickly saying, and John answers for every reader after him, Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus, the same prayer Paul closed a letter with in Aramaic, Maranatha (1 Corinthians 16:22), now closing the whole canon in Greek. The Bible that opened with God walking in a garden with Adam ends with his people asking him to come and walk with them again.

Revelation 22:21

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all closes Revelation the way Paul closed his own letters, a benediction rather than another vision, grounding the book's fire and glory back in the ordinary grace every believer needs for the waiting between the promise and its coming. Amen ends the last book as it ends the whole of Scripture, the reader's own assent asked for one final time. The canon that began, in the beginning God created the heaven and the earth, closes here with the new heaven and the new earth already shown and grace holding the space between.
