John 2:1-2

The third day counts forward from the calling of the disciples in chapter 1, and the bench reads the week John has quietly kept since 1:29 (the next day, the next day, the third day) as a deliberate frame, a week of new creation opening the Gospel of the Word made flesh. Jesus and his disciples are invited guests, not officiants, and his presence at an ordinary village wedding stands against every reading of him as a solitary ascetic; the Lord who will be called a friend of publicans and sinners begins his signs at a marriage feast.

John 2:3

Running out of wine at a village wedding was a real social shame in that culture, the family's hospitality judged by the whole gathering, and Mary brings the need to her son rather than to the host. She states the problem without a request attached, and the bench reads her words as expectant faith rather than a demand, a mother who already trusts what he can do though she does not yet know how he will do it.

John 2:4

Woman is not a term of coldness in that speech, the same address he gives her again from the cross at 19:26, but the question that follows draws a real line between her authority as mother and his authority as the Son sent on his Father's errand. Mine hour is not yet come is the first appearance of the hour that runs the whole Gospel (7:30, 8:20, 12:23, 13:1), the fixed time of his cross and glory that no one, not even his mother, can move forward by asking. The bench notes that he goes on to act, so the answer refuses her the right to direct the timing while granting the substance of what she asked.

John 2:5

These are the last words of Mary recorded anywhere in Scripture, and the bench across the centuries has heard in them the whole of her office: not to answer for Christ but to point to him. She gives the servants no explanation and no plan, only unqualified obedience to whatever he commands, and the sentence stands as the pattern of faith the Gospel asks of every reader long after the wedding is forgotten.

John 2:6-7

The six stone jars stood ready for the ceremonial handwashing the law and its later customs required, each holding two or three firkins, so the six together held somewhere near a hundred and twenty gallons, and the bench reads the sheer scale as Jesus filling the vessels of Jewish purification to overflowing with something the law never supplied. Jesus commands the servants to fill them with water to the brim, no room left for anyone to suspect wine had already been added, and they obey without asking why.

John 2:8-10

The miracle happens between the drawing and the tasting with no word describing the change itself, so the governor of the feast tastes finished wine and knows nothing of where it came from, though the servants who drew the water knew. His verdict to the bridegroom overturns the ordinary custom of serving the best wine first and the weaker wine once guests are less discerning, and the bench takes his surprised compliment, thou hast kept the good wine until now, as an unwitting testimony to the abundance and the quality of what Christ gives, better than what the world offers and given last rather than first.

John 2:11

John calls it a sign, semeion, not merely a wonder, the first of the seven that structure the Book of Signs and each one a claim about who Jesus is enacted rather than argued. He manifested forth his glory answers the prologue's we beheld his glory at 1:14, the tabernacling Word now showing that glory in an act of ordinary kindness at a village feast rather than a display of power for its own sake. His disciples believed on him: they were already disciples before the sign, so the verse describes faith deepened and confirmed, not faith created from nothing.

John 2:12

he went down to Capernaum: The whole family moves together, mother and brothers alongside the disciples, a brief and quiet transition before the public ministry in Jerusalem begins in the next verse. Capernaum becomes the base of the Galilean ministry the Synoptic Gospels record at length, and the short stay here, not many days, marks it as a stopping point on the way to the feast rather than a settled home at this stage.

John 2:13

This is the first of three Passovers John names across the Gospel (2:13, 6:4, 11:55), and the count is the chief reason the church has always reckoned Christ's public ministry at roughly three years rather than the single year the Synoptics alone might suggest. Jesus went up to Jerusalem as every observant Jew was bound to, keeping the feast the law required before the confrontation of the next verses breaks out in the temple he came to honor.

John 2:14-16

The trade in sacrificial animals and the money changers converting foreign coin to the temple's own currency served a real practical need for pilgrims arriving from every province, but it had settled into the Court of the Gentiles, the one court where a non-Jew could come near to pray, crowding out the very worship the temple was meant to offer the nations. Jesus makes a scourge of small cords and drives out the animals and the sellers, pouring out the coins and overturning the tables, and his charge to the dove sellers, make not my Father's house an house of merchandise, is a direct claim to sonship as much as a rebuke of the trade. The bench notes this act echoes across all four Gospels though John places a cleansing at the start of the ministry and the Synoptics at its close, and most read two distinct cleansings rather than one displaced event.

John 2:17

The disciples' memory reaches for Psalm 69:9, one of the Gospel's own Old Testament citations that the brief marks as keep-hard, a psalm of the suffering righteous one whose zeal for God's house consumes him. The word eaten carries a note the psalm's own second half will later fill out in this Gospel's passion, that the zeal driving him out the sellers is the same zeal that will finally consume his life, the temple's true purifier becoming its true sacrifice.

John 2:18-19

The Jews, the temple authorities present for the disturbance, demand credentials for so bold an act, a sign to justify overturning the establishment's commerce by his own authority alone. Jesus answers with a riddle rather than an immediate wonder: Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up, words his hearers can only take as a boast about Herod's actual building, and words his own followers will not understand until long after this day is past.

John 2:20-22

Herod's rebuilding of the temple had begun around 20 to 19 BC, and forty six years from that start places this exchange near AD 27 or 28, one of the Gospel's few points where a stated span lets historians fix a date to the narrative. But he spake of the temple of his body: John supplies the true referent his contemporaries could not see, the tabernacling of 1:14 now given its full weight, God's dwelling among men located finally not in a building of stone but in the risen body of Christ. Only after he was risen from the dead did the disciples remember and believe both the scripture and the word Jesus had spoken, faith completed in hindsight rather than granted in the moment.

John 2:23-25

Many believed in his name at the feast on the strength of the miracles he did, and the very next clause turns the same verb back on itself in the Greek, for Jesus did not commit, did not entrust, himself unto them: a crowd's faith drawn only by wonders is not yet the faith the Gospel is written to produce (20:31). He needed not that any should testify of man, for he knew what was in man, an assertion of the omniscience the prologue already claimed for the Word, and the chapter's last sentence opens directly onto the man who comes to him by night in chapter 3, a specific case of exactly what Jesus already knew.
