John 20:1-2

Mary Magdalene comes while it was yet dark, the darkness answering the light and darkness thread running through this whole Gospel, and finds the stone already taken away from the sepulchre, a discovery that reads at first only as theft rather than resurrection. She runneth to Simon Peter and the other disciple whom Jesus loved, and her first sentence, they have taken away the Lord, and we know not where they have laid him, shows no expectation of resurrection anywhere in her mind at this point. The bench notes the honesty of the record, the first witnesses arriving at grief-stricken confusion rather than triumphant faith, exactly the opposite of what an invented account would have supplied.

John 20:3-5

Peter and that other disciple, traditionally John himself, run together to the tomb, and the detail that the other disciple did outrun Peter has been read as nothing more mysterious than a younger man's legs, John's own modest way of placing himself in the story without naming himself. He stoops down, sees the linen clothes lying, yet went he not in, a hesitation the bench reads variously as reverence, caution, or simple deference to Peter's seniority arriving moments later. The empty grave clothes, seen before anyone enters, are already the first physical evidence that no grave robber left behind.

John 20:6-7

Peter, characteristically bold, goes straight into the sepulchre and sees the linen clothes lie, and the further detail John supplies, the napkin that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself, has struck commentators since the early church as decisive. A body removed by thieves or even by reverent friends would carry the wrappings away or leave them disturbed in haste; grave clothes left folded and undisturbed, the linen collapsed where a body had been and the napkin still wrapped in its own place, describe a body that passed through its wrappings rather than one unwound from them. The bench reads the scene as quiet, orderly evidence against theft laid out for two witnesses to find.

John 20:8-10

he saw, and believed: Then went in also that other disciple, and he saw, and believed, John's own testimony to the moment his faith in the resurrection was born, from grave clothes alone before any appearance of the risen Lord. For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead is John's honest admission that neither disciple arrived at the tomb expecting this, belief following the evidence rather than being read back into it after the fact, the disciples' own hope of resurrection not yet connected in their minds to what had just happened. They went away again unto their own home, the plain ending of the scene, Mary alone left at the tomb for what follows.

John 20:11-13

Mary stood without at the sepulchre weeping, having stayed behind after the two disciples left, and stooping down to look in finds what they did not, two angels in white sitting where the body had lain, one at the head and one at the feet, a detail the bench reads against the mercy seat's two cherubim over the ark, the place where atonement was once made now guarded the same way over an empty grave. Their question, woman, why weepest thou, and her answer repeat almost word for word what she had told Peter and John, her grief still fixed on a missing body rather than a risen Lord even in the presence of angels. The scene's ordinariness, angels asked and answered like anyone else, keeps the account free of theatrical wonder even at its most miraculous moment.

John 20:14-16

She turned herself back and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus, a recognition delayed the bench reads as grief clouding her eyes, or the risen body genuinely different in some way not yet fully to be understood, rather than any deficiency in the evidence itself. Supposing him to be the gardener carries its own quiet irony, a garden holding the tomb (19:41) and Mary mistaking the second Adam for the gardener of a garden he in fact now truly keeps. One word breaks through everything, Mary, his voice speaking her name exactly as the good shepherd who calls his own sheep by name (10:3), and her answer, Rabboni, my Master, is recognition complete and instant.

John 20:17

Touch me not has troubled readers who forget the fuller instruction that follows in the same breath, for I am not yet ascended to my Father, the sense being closer to stop clinging to me, since Thomas will be invited to touch the very same body eight days later (20:27); the bench reads Mary's impulse as an attempt to hold on to the old relationship exactly as it was, and Jesus redirecting her toward a mission instead. Go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father, and to my God, and your God gives Mary the first resurrection commission in the Gospel, sent before any apostle to announce the news. The phrase my Father and your Father, my God and your God distinguishes his sonship from theirs even while including them in it, natural in one case, adopted in the other.

John 20:18

Mary Magdalene came and told the disciples that she had seen the Lord makes a woman, whose testimony carried no legal weight in that culture's courts, the first herald of the resurrection to the church itself, a detail the bench takes as one more small proof against invention, since no one fabricating a first-century account would have chosen a woman as the founding witness. That she had seen the Lord repeats the exact language the Gospel will use of every subsequent appearance, an eyewitness claim stated as plainly as John states his own at the cross (19:35). The apostles' own initial disbelief of her report, recorded elsewhere in the Gospels, only strengthens the honesty of this simple sentence.

John 20:19-20

for fear of the Jews: The doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, meaning the Judean authorities they had every reason to expect would move against Jesus' followers next, and into that locked room came Jesus and stood in the midst, the closed doors no barrier to the risen body. Peace be unto you is the ordinary Jewish greeting, shalom, made extraordinary by the man speaking it and the wounds he then shows, his hands and his side, proof that the one standing before them is the same body that was crucified rather than a spirit or a substitute. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord answers the sorrow Jesus had promised would turn to joy (16:20-22) in the plainest possible fulfillment.

John 20:21-23

As my Father hath sent me, even so send I you gives the church its commission on the model of the Son's own sending, and he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost recalls Genesis 2:7's breath of life, a new creation act performed on the first day of the new week. Whose soever sins ye remit, they are remitted unto them, and whose soever sins ye retain, they are retained has divided the church for centuries; the Roman Catholic reading takes it as institutional authority for sacramental absolution through the priesthood, while the Protestant commentators generally read it as authority to declare, on the ground of the gospel itself, whose sins are forgiven through faith in Christ and whose remain unforgiven through unbelief, an authority of proclamation rather than of private disposal. Both readings agree the authority is Christ's own, given through the Spirit rather than invented by the church.

John 20:24-25

Thomas, called Didymus, the twin, was not with them when Jesus came, and his famous demand, except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails, and put my finger into the print of the nails, and thrust my hand into his side, I will not believe, is read by the bench less as unusual stubbornness than as an honest statement of the same standard the other disciples had already been given, sight of the wounds. The bench notes Thomas asks for nothing more than what verse 20 records the ten already received, seeing the Lord's hands and side, his fault lying in refusing to trust their testimony rather than in the terms he sets. His absence from the room that first evening cost him a week of needless doubt his own choice to be elsewhere had produced.

John 20:26-27

After eight days again his disciples were within, and Thomas with them, this second gathering falling on the following first day of the week, a detail the bench reads as the earliest seed of the church's settled practice of meeting on that day rather than the sabbath. The doors being shut again, Jesus stood in the midst exactly as before, and his invitation to Thomas, reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands, and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side, repeats Thomas's own words from the previous week almost exactly, proof that the Lord had heard the private demand though no one had reported it to him. Be not faithless, but believing turns an evidential test into a personal appeal, addressing the man's heart rather than only his hands.

John 20:28

My Lord and my God: Thomas answered and said unto him, My Lord and my God is the highest confession of Christ's deity spoken by any human voice in the four Gospels, addressed directly to Jesus rather than merely said about him, and the bench notes Jesus receives the worship without correction, exactly as he had received it from the healed blind man at 9:38, in sharp contrast to the angel who refuses worship in Revelation 22:8-9. The confession answers the prologue's own opening claim, the Word was God (1:1), the Gospel closing its main narrative on the same note it began. No apostle who believed Jesus to be merely a great teacher could have spoken these words without correction from the one they addressed, and none was given.

John 20:29

Thomas, because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed states the fact without rebuke for the faith itself, only for the delay in reaching it, and blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed turns from the apostle in the room to every reader of the Gospel who will never have Thomas's opportunity. The bench reads this beatitude as addressed directly across the centuries to John's own audience and to every later reader, a blessing pronounced on exactly the position the book's readers actually occupy. The sight given to the apostles becomes, through their testimony, the ground on which unseen faith can rightly stand.

John 20:30-31

which are not written in this book: Many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book states plainly that John has been selective throughout, seven signs chosen from a much larger store, and the bench takes the admission as evidence of deliberate design rather than incomplete memory. These are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God gives the Gospel's own stated purpose in its own words, the two titles held together, Christ answering Israel's messianic hope and Son of God answering the deity established from 1:1 onward. And that believing ye might have life through his name closes the purpose on the very word, life, that has run through the whole book since 1:4, the sign of the empty tomb existing to produce exactly the faith this last sentence names.
