Job 3:1-2

Job curses his day and never his God, which is the wager's exact terms held to the letter, put forth thine hand at 1:11 and touch his bone and his flesh at 2:5, both aimed at cursing God to his face and neither achieved. Henry marks the distinction as the hinge of the whole book: seven days of silence break into a lament that will run for thirty chapters, and even at its worst it never crosses the one line the accuser bet it would cross. The chapter opens the book's long interrogation, the first of Job's many whys, none of them yet aimed at a friend because none has spoken yet.

Job 3:3-6

Job's curse runs backward through the vocabulary of creation itself, darkness called upon light, so Delitzsch reads the whole passage as an unmaking, Genesis 1 spoken in reverse over a single day. Let not God regard it from above asks the day to fall out of providence's sight entirely, and let the blackness of the day terrify it piles up nearly every Hebrew word for darkness the language has. Gill notes the request is impossible on its face, since the day in question has already passed into history and cannot be unmade, and reads the impossibility itself as part of the grief's honesty.

Job 3:7-10

The curse turns to the night of his conception, asking it struck from the calendar and left solitary, without the joyful voice a birth-night would normally carry. Verse 8 in the King James asks that they curse it that curse the day, who are ready to raise up their mourning, and the margin's alternative sets a different image beside it, the Hebrew read by Delitzsch as those skilled to rouse leviathan, professional cursers whose trade is stirring up the sea-monster of chaos itself. That reading is the margin's own and is offered here as the philology it is, worth naming without pressing it past what the verse states.

Job 3:11-13

The curse gives way to a second movement, no longer asking the day unmade but asking why Job himself was ever let live past it. Why did the knees prevent me questions the ritual of a newborn set upon the father's knees to be received into the family, a custom Gill and Clarke both read behind the phrase, so that Job wishes the very act of welcome had not happened. For now should I have lain still and been quiet turns the wish toward rest, the first appearance of a word this chapter will use six times before it ends.

Job 3:14-19

Job pictures the grave as a leveling place where kings who built desolate places for themselves lie beside the hidden untimely birth that never saw light, and Henry reads the catalogue as deliberately mixing the greatest men Job can name with the least significant death he can imagine, both arriving at the same rest. There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary be at rest gives the chapter its most quoted line, honest grief rather than doctrine, a longing for an end to trouble rather than a claim about the wicked's final state. The servant is free from his master closes the picture with the one inequality death itself erases.

Job 3:20-23

The question turns from Job's own birth to a general complaint, why light and life are given at all to a man whose way is hid. Whom God hath hedged in returns Satan's own word from 1:10 in the opposite sense, the accuser called the hedge a protection to be envied, and Job, who never heard him say it, calls the same hedge a prison shutting him in. Barnes notes the coincidence of language is the reader's alone to see, since nothing in the text lets Job know the word he reaches for is the very word that opened the case against him.

Job 3:24-26

The chapter closes on plain, licensed grief rather than argument, sighing in place of appetite and roarings poured out like water. I was not in safety, neither had I rest, neither was I quiet; yet trouble came answers the very security the hedge of 1:10 had given him, Gill reading the verse as Job's confession that even his careful, God-fearing life carried a dread he could never fully set down. Clarke notes the chapter ends without resolution on purpose, since the friends have not yet spoken and the debate the rest of the book records has not yet begun.
