Hosea 5:1-2

The summons now names three parties together, priests, the house of Israel and the house of the king, judgment reaching every office at once rather than singling out one class. Mizpah and Tabor were places of gathering and even of worship, and the bench reads the snare and net set there as the leaders themselves turning holy ground into a trap for the people they were meant to shepherd. The revolters are profound to make slaughter, going deep into their scheming, though the Lord has been a rebuker of them all, his warnings already given and already refused.

Hosea 5:3-5

I know Ephraim, and Israel is not hid from me answers every excuse before it is made, the Lord's knowledge of the nation as complete as his knowledge of Gomer, and Ephraim's whoredom named as the same unfaithfulness the book's opening chapters dramatized in one marriage. Their doings will not turn them to God because the spirit of whoredoms is settled in the midst of them, an inward disposition rather than a single lapse, so that they have not known the Lord even while claiming his name. The pride of Israel testifies to his own face, and Judah is drawn down with Ephraim and Israel, the southern kingdom's fall tied to the northern kingdom's example, the bench reading this as an early warning of Judah's own coming exile.

Hosea 5:6-7

seek the Lord: They will go with flocks and herds to seek the Lord but will not find him, for he has withdrawn himself, and the older writers take this of formal sacrifice offered without the repentance that alone makes an offering acceptable, ritual without the heart the earlier chapter already indicted. They have dealt treacherously against the Lord, begetting strange children, a phrase the bench reads either of children born of mixed marriages with idolaters or of a generation raised outside the covenant's instruction, the readings named without settling between them. Now shall a month devour them with their portions, the judgment falling swiftly, in the span of a single new moon, on their land and their harvest alike.

Hosea 5:8-10

The trumpet call rings across Benjamin's own territory, Gibeah and Ramah and Beth-aven all named, an alarm sounding for an invasion the prophet already sees coming rather than a summons to battle the nation can win. Ephraim will be desolate in the day of rebuke, the certainty stated among the tribes as a settled fact rather than a threat that might yet be turned aside. The princes of Judah are likened to those who remove the ancient boundary stone, a crime Deuteronomy curses by name, and the bench reads it of Judah's encroachment on Israelite territory during this era's border wars, drawing the Lord's wrath down on Judah for the same greed that undoes Ephraim.

Hosea 5:11-13

Ephraim is oppressed: Ephraim is oppressed and broken in judgment because he willingly walked after the commandment, a phrase the bench reads as walking after a human command, most likely Jeroboam's calf worship instituted at Dan and Bethel, chosen willingly rather than forced upon the people. The Lord himself will be as a moth to Ephraim, a slow and hidden decay, and as rottenness to Judah, the same corruption working more visibly in the south, judgment described as an internal wasting rather than a single blow. When Ephraim saw his sickness he ran to Assyria and to king Jareb for a cure, the historical alliances Hoshea and earlier kings struck with Assyria named as the fact behind the figure, and the verdict is blunt: he could not heal or cure the wound, since the remedy for covenant unfaithfulness was never a foreign treaty.

Hosea 5:14-15

The image turns from slow decay to sudden seizure, the Lord himself as a lion to Ephraim and a young lion to Judah, tearing and carrying away what he tears with none able to rescue, the same God who was Israel's shepherd now cast as the predator judgment makes him. I will go and return to my place is read by the bench as the Lord withdrawing his presence until the nation acknowledges its offence and seeks his face, and the closing line, in their affliction they will seek me early, both explains why the exile must come and anticipates the plea of 6:1, come, and let us return unto the Lord, the two chapters reading as one continuous movement from judgment to hoped-for repentance.
