Ephraim's sin is exposed the moment God moves to heal. The court is an oven the baker need not stir, passion banked all night, blazing at morning, princes made sick with the heat of wine. Foreign alliances have hollowed the nation out: 'Ephraim is a cake not turned' (7:8), scorched one side and raw the other; strangers devour his strength and he does not know it; gray hairs are on him and he does not know it. He flutters between empires: 'Ephraim is like a silly dove, without understanding: they call unto Egypt, they go to Assyria.' They return, but not to the Most High.
