LXX: "And the injury of Israel will be humbled before him: and Israel and Ephraim will be weakened in their iniquities, and Judah will also be weakened with them." The word "Gaon" is interpreted by Septuagint and Symmachus as "injury," by Aquila and Theodotion as "pride."

"I know all about Ephraim", and Ephraim's prostitution is the unfaithfulness the book's opening chapters showed in one marriage. "Their deeds do not permit them to return to their God", for "a spirit of prostitution is within them". "Israel’s arrogance testifies against them", and "even Judah stumbles with them."

The arrogance of Israel testifies to its face, and Jerome records that the Hebrew word was also read as injury. Jamieson, Fausset and Brown set this word later than 4:15, when Judah was only warned. Now Judah stumbles with Israel and Ephraim.

Their pride kept them from repenting of their iniquity, and therefore they shall fall in it. Note, Those that are not humbled for their sins are likely to perish for ever in their sins. It is added, Judah also shall fall with them in her iniquity.

And the pride of Israel - Pride was from the first the leading sin of Ephraim. Together with Manasseh, (with whom they made, in some respects, one whole, as “the children of Joseph, Jos 16:4; Jos 17:14), they were nearly equal in number to Judah. When numbered in the wilderness, Judah had 74,600 fighting men, Ephraim and Manasseh together 72,700. They speak of themselves as a “great people, forasmuch as the Lord has blessed me hitherto” Jos 17:

Or, "in his face," as in Isa 3:9. Judah . . . shall fall with them--This prophecy is later than Ho 4:15, when Judah had not gone so far in idolatry; now her imitation of Israel's bad example provokes the threat of her being doomed to share in Israel's punishment.
