on Hosea 7:8-10
"Ephraim mixes with the nations", looking outward for safety, and so "Ephraim is an unturned cake", burned on one side and raw on the other. "Foreigners consume his strength, but he does not notice". "Israel’s arrogance testifies against them", and still "they do not return to the LORD their God".

Barnes read Israel's arrogance as the witness against Israel. Each blow from God only drew the arrogance further out. That arrogance kept Israel from confessing its sins and seeking the LORD.

All the afflictions of God humbled him not; yea, they but brought out his pride, which “kept him from acknowledging and repenting of the sins which had brought those evils upon him, and from “turning to God and seeking to Him” for remedy” .
