How it is read

This is the chapter where the giving runs past what the work needs, and it is the one chapter of the building span where the corpus carries four commentators at once. Ramban tells the sequence of days. The people brought the whole donation to the tent in one day. The wise men took it from Moses that day and early the next. The people kept bringing until Moses was told there was more than enough (Ramban on Exodus 36:3:1, the Chavel translation, CC-BY). Rashi reads the report of the craftsmen as a plain statement of quantity, that the people brought "more than is sufficient for the needs of the work" (Rashi on Exodus 36:5:1). The sufficiency of the seventh verse he takes to mean that the contributing was enough for all the work and left some over (Rashi on Exodus 36:7:1). Sforno draws a rule out of the surplus. The donations went past what was needed for the tasks God had commanded, and God "wanted no additions, nor omissions" (Sforno on Exodus 36:5:1, from Eliyahu Munk, HaChut Hameshulash, CC-BY). He reads the proclamation of the sixth verse as a stop on further work rather than on further giving. The timber and the spun material were to be brought no more (Sforno on Exodus 36:6:1). He also reads the list of craftsmen as a record of how ready each was to give his skill (Sforno on Exodus 36:4:1). Rashi is quoted from the Rosenbaum and Silbermann edition of 1929 to 1934, public domain. Ibn Ezra comments at fourteen places from Exodus 36:1:1 to 36:33:1, and Malbim at Exodus 36:1:1 and 36:2:1, all cited by reference.

What the rabbis say

The corpus records forty places where the Midrash and the Talmud draw on this chapter, cited here by reference. Midrash Lekach Tov follows the building at Exodus 36:1:1, 36:7:1, 36:7:2, 36:8:1, 36:8:2 and 36:8:3. It reads the boards at Exodus 36:34:1, 36:34:2 and 36:34:3, and the curtains at Exodus 25:2:5 and 26:2:1. Midrash Tanchuma reads the chapter at Nasso 13:1, Vayakhel 9:1, Vayakhel 9:2 and Ki Tisa 19:5. Midrash Tanchuma Buber reads it at Nasso 20:1, Nasso 29:1, Vayakhel 10:1 and Pekudei 8:1. The overflow of the offering is read at Bamidbar Rabbah 1:10, 9:12, 12:15 and 12:16, and at Ein Yaakov, Yoma 8:4 and Sotah 1:4. Sanhedrin 69b:18 and Bava Kamma 54a:1 read the craftsmen, and the Jerusalem Talmud reads them at Yevamot 10:7:8 and Shabbat 1:1:2. Shemot Rabbah 50:4 and Pesikta Rabbati 33:1 read the curtains and the veil. Sifrei Devarim 306:25 reads the boards of the twenty eighth verse.
