Ecclesiastes 1:1

The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem open the book with a title rather than a name, Qoheleth in the Hebrew, one who assembles or addresses a congregation. The book never states Solomon outright, and the portrait that follows, wisdom above all before him, unmatched works, and wealth beyond any king in Jerusalem, points there without naming him, which the bench reads as deliberate restraint on the text's own part. Jewish tradition credits the men of Hezekiah with preserving the book, and the older writers commonly read an old king looking back on a life already spent, a reading the text's own tone supports without stating it as fact.

Ecclesiastes 1:2

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity stands only here and again at 12:8, the exact frame that opens and closes the whole book so that everything argued between sits inside this one verdict. The Hebrew hebel is breath or vapor, and the philology matters more than the English word suggests: the claim is not that life is worthless but that it cannot be seized, closed in the fist, or made to hold still. Paul's own language in Romans 8:20, the creature made subject to vanity, is the New Testament's nearest word to the Preacher's own, the bench notes, drawn from the Septuagint's very term.

Ecclesiastes 1:3

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun states the book's controlling question in commercial language, profit, a ledger term applied to an entire life. Under the sun is the phrase the book will repeat twenty seven times, and it names the vantage point the whole search is conducted from, life as it appears from ground level without appeal to what lies beyond death or before creation. The question is not answered here; it is filed, and the chapters that follow are the accounting that tries to close it.

Ecclesiastes 1:4-7

One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever opens a short poem built entirely from things that move without arriving, the sun hastening to the place where it rose, the wind whirling continually about its circuits, the rivers running into a sea that is never full. Each image circles rather than progresses, which is the poem's argument stated in pictures before the Preacher states it in words: motion without profit, labor without a destination reached. The earth's own permanence against man's brief passing sets the human generations inside the same tireless cycle the sun and wind and rivers keep.

Ecclesiastes 1:8

All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it draws the poem's conclusion, the endless motion just described matched by an endless appetite that never closes its own account. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing states the same vanity from inside the human senses rather than outside in nature, desire renewing itself as constantly as the wind changes direction. The verse gives the chapter its two witnesses, the world's own cycles and the human hunger that watches them, both circling without arrival.

Ecclesiastes 1:9-11

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be, and there is no new thing under the sun rules out novelty itself as an answer to the profit question, since the wheel the poem just described has no exit built into it. Verse 10's is there any thing whereof it may be said, see, this is new, answers its own question before an answer is given, it hath been already of old time, and verse 11 closes the point with human memory itself, no remembrance of former things, and none to come with those that follow after. The chapter's opening argument is complete by verse 11: not only does nothing new happen, but even what did happen is not kept, which the bench reads as the vanity verdict extended from the world into memory.

Ecclesiastes 1:12-15

I the Preacher was king over Israel in Jerusalem restates the credentials of verse 1 in the Preacher's own voice, and verse 13 states the method: I gave my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all things that are done under heaven, an investigation rather than a mood. The travail is named as God's own gift to the sons of man to be exercised with it, which the bench reads as keeping the search itself inside providence rather than treating it as rebellion. Verse 15 gives the first finding in proverb form, that which is crooked cannot be made straight, and that which is wanting cannot be numbered, limits wisdom meets before it has even begun its work.

Ecclesiastes 1:16-18

I communed with mine own heart, saying, Lo, I am come to great estate, and have gotten more wisdom than all they that have been before me in Jerusalem opens the book's first controlled experiment, wisdom itself put to the test by a man uniquely equipped to run it. Verse 17 widens the trial to know madness and folly as well, and the finding repeats the chapter's own refrain, this also is vexation of spirit, wisdom no more exempt from the verdict than the sun and wind before it. The chapter's last line states the cost directly: for in much wisdom is much grief, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow, the first of several experiments the book will run before it reaches its own conclusion.
