Daniel 5:1-4

Belshazzar's feast opens the chapter on the same stage where Nebuchadnezzar's pride was broken one chapter earlier, and the bench reads the placement as deliberate: a son who had every reason to know what pride costs a king in this book chooses that same night to send for the temple vessels his grandfather took from Jerusalem. Wine before a thousand lords sets the scene as revelry rather than state business, and Gill and Barnes both note the vessels are drunk from precisely because they are sacred, an act of contempt aimed at the God of Israel rather than mere carelessness. The gods of gold, silver, brass, iron, wood and stone are praised in the same breath, idols that cannot see, hear, or know, which the chapter will use against Belshazzar directly at verse 23.

Daniel 5:5-6

The fingers of a man's hand appear with no body attached, writing over against the candlestick where the light makes the writing plain to every eye in the hall, and the commentators mark the staging as itself a rebuke: the very lamp Belshazzar lit for his feast becomes the lamp by which his sentence is read. The king's countenance changes, his thoughts trouble him, and his knees smite one another, a physical collapse the older writers read as conscience answering before any word is interpreted. Keil notes the terror is proportioned to guilt rather than to the mystery, since a hand alone, without a voice, ought to be less terrifying than what it plainly is to this king.

Daniel 5:7-9

The king's wise men are called for exactly as Nebuchadnezzar once called for his, and fail exactly as they once failed, the second such scene in the book and the second time Babylon's own experts cannot read what Babylon's own God has written. The promised reward, scarlet clothing, a gold chain, and the third ruler in the kingdom, has puzzled readers expecting first or second place, and the evidence lane answers it directly below rather than treating it as a slip of the pen. Verse 9 leaves the whole court astonied, the same word used of Nebuchadnezzar's counselors, tying this failure to the pattern the book has already established twice.

Daniel 5:10-12

the queen: The queen who enters unsummoned is read by the bench as the queen mother, likely Nebuchadnezzar's own widow, since she remembers Daniel's service under the former king in detail Belshazzar's own generation had apparently forgotten or ignored. Her praise of Daniel, an excellent spirit, knowledge, understanding, and the interpreting of dreams, is offered as inherited memory rather than new information, which the bench reads as an indictment of a court that had let Daniel slip to the margins during Belshazzar's reign. She names him precisely, Daniel whom the king named Belteshazzar, closing the identification before Daniel is even sent for.

Daniel 5:13-16

Belshazzar's first words to Daniel identify him by exile status before anything else, art thou that Daniel of the children of the captivity of Judah, a reminder the bench reads as unintentionally exposing the king's own contempt even as he asks for help. The offer repeats verse 7's reward word for word, scarlet, the chain, and third ruler, and Henry observes that Belshazzar still imagines Daniel can be bought, having learned nothing from what his own wise men's failure should have taught him about what kind of knowledge is actually on offer here. The repetition across the two summons keeps the reward question live for the chapter's evidence note at verse 29.

Daniel 5:17

Daniel refuses the reward before he has even read the writing, let thy gifts be to thyself, and give thy rewards to another, a single verse the bench treats as the moral center of the whole scene: he will tell Belshazzar the truth whether or not it is rewarded, because the truth does not change with the fee. Gill contrasts this refusal with Daniel's earlier acceptance of honors under Nebuchadnezzar, reading the difference as circumstance rather than principle, since here the king's own doom is the message and no gift could soften what must be said. He still promises to read the writing and make known the interpretation, refusing payment, not the task.

Daniel 5:18-21

Before touching the writing Daniel retells the whole of chapter 4 to Belshazzar in miniature: the majesty God gave Nebuchadnezzar, the pride that lifted his heart, and the seven years among the beasts till he knew that the most high God ruled in the kingdom of men. Barnes reads this as Daniel forcing Belshazzar to hear the lesson his own family's history already taught, so that when judgment falls in this chapter it cannot be called unwarned or unprecedented. The phrase that most high God ruleth in the kingdom of men recurs from chapter 4 nearly word for word, binding the two chapters into one demonstration of the same truth to two different kings.

Daniel 5:22-23

Daniel turns from the grandfather's history to the grandson's guilt directly, thou his son, O Belshazzar, hast not humbled thine heart, though thou knewest all this, making plain that Belshazzar's sin is not ignorance but refusal to learn from a lesson he had every means of knowing. The charge against him is stated in full: lifting himself against the Lord of heaven, drinking from the temple vessels, and praising gods of silver, gold, brass, iron, wood and stone which see not, nor hear, nor know, set directly against the God in whose hand his very breath lies. Wesley and JFB both mark the closing clause, and whose are all thy ways hast thou not glorified, as the verdict's real center, since the charge is finally not the vessels but the refusal to honor the God who gives him life and rule.

Daniel 5:24-25

The writing itself is given in Aramaic weights and measures, MENE, MENE, TEKEL, UPHARSIN, terms Keil identifies as a mina, a mina, a shekel, and half-minas or divisions, ordinary units of commercial weighing turned into a sentence on a kingdom. The bench notes the words were likely legible to the wise men as vocabulary and unreadable only as meaning, which is why Daniel's contribution is interpretation rather than decipherment, reading a message hidden in plain words rather than in a foreign script.

Daniel 5:26-28

Daniel unpacks each word as a sentence on the kingdom itself: MENE, God has numbered Belshazzar's kingdom and finished it; TEKEL, he is weighed in the balances and found wanting; PERES, his kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians. Clarke reads the wordplay in the Aramaic root shared by peres and Persia as deliberate, the very name of the coming conqueror hidden inside the verdict word for division, so that the sentence names its own executor. The three words move from accounting to judgment to political consequence in a single breath, the fullest verdict any king receives in the book.

Daniel 5:29

Belshazzar keeps his word even under sentence of doom, clothing Daniel in scarlet and proclaiming him third ruler in the kingdom, and the evidence lane reads this promotion as the chapter's own explanation for a puzzle that troubled readers for centuries: the monuments recovered by nineteenth and twentieth century archaeology show Belshazzar as crown prince and co-regent under his father Nabonidus, who was away from Babylon and remained the kingdom's actual first ruler, which makes third the highest office Belshazzar himself had the standing to grant. The detail once alleged as evidence the book was late fiction is now read by the bench as a mark of genuine court knowledge.

Daniel 5:30-31

In that night was Belshazzar the king of the Chaldeans slain closes the sentence within hours of its writing, and Darius the Median took the kingdom at about sixty two years old, the fall of Babylon accomplished in the same feast that began the chapter. The bench treats Darius the Median's identity as an open historical question, most commonly read as a throne name for a governor set over Babylon under Cyrus rather than a separate independent monarch, a puzzle the book itself does not resolve and later chapters continue to use without further comment.
