2 Chronicles 18:1-2

Chronicles supplies its own opening the parallel account never gives: Jehoshaphat had riches and honour in abundance before he joined affinity with Ahab, so the wealth from chapter 17 and the marriage stand side by side in one sentence. The affinity is the marriage of Jehoshaphat's son Jehoram to Athaliah, a daughter of Ahab and Jezebel, a match that hands Judah's throne to a daughter of the house of Omri in chapter 22. Ahab's feast at Samaria, sheep and oxen killed in abundance, is the hospitality that persuades Jehoshaphat toward Ramoth-gilead, and the narrator lets the reader see the price of the alliance before the campaign it produces even begins.

2 Chronicles 18:3

Jehoshaphat's answer to Ahab's invitation binds Judah to Israel's war in one breath, I am as thou art, and my people as thy people, and we will be with thee in the war. Kept word for word from 1 Ki 22:4, the vow returns almost unchanged a generation later at 2 Ki 3:7, when Jehoshaphat makes the same pledge to Jehoram against Moab. The house of David keeps offering this formula to the house of Omri, and Chronicles' own verdict on the habit waits at 19:2, where Jehu the prophet asks him, lovest thou them that hate the Lord.

2 Chronicles 18:4-6

Jehoshaphat asks first for the word of the Lord before he asks for a battle plan, and Ahab answers with four hundred prophets who declare with one voice, Go up; for God will deliver it into the king's hand. Jehoshaphat is not satisfied and asks whether a prophet of the Lord remains besides these, the same suspicion of a court chorus this book records again at 20:20, when Jehoshaphat later tells his own army to believe the Lord's prophets rather than a flattering crowd. The scene runs word for word with 1 Ki 22:5-7, where its full weight already stands.

2 Chronicles 18:7-9

Ahab names his objection to Micaiah before the man is even sent for, I hate him, for he never prophesied good unto me, but always evil, an admission Jehoshaphat rebukes on the spot, let not the king say so. The scene stages the confrontation as royal theater, two kings enthroned in their robes in a void place at the gate of Samaria while all the other prophets perform before them. The Targum's own reading of the moment, recorded by Clarke, has Jehoshaphat praying at the gate while the false prophets around him prophesy lies, a reading that sharpens the contrast the text itself already draws between one true prophet and four hundred flatterers.

2 Chronicles 18:10-11

Zedekiah's sign-act, horns of iron with which thou shalt push Syria until they be consumed, dramatizes Deut 33:17's picture of a bull's horns pushing the peoples, an enacted prophecy of the kind Jeremiah's yoke and Ezekiel's brick later repeat. All four hundred prophesy the identical verdict, go up to Ramoth-gilead and prosper, a chorus answering the king's question before Micaiah ever opens his mouth. Chronicles preserves the scene unchanged from 1 Ki 22:11-12, where the sign-act already has its full exposition.

2 Chronicles 18:12-13

The messenger sent to fetch Micaiah presses him before he has said a word, let thy word be like one of theirs, and speak thou good. Micaiah's answer sets his whole office in one sentence, as the Lord liveth, even what my God saith, that will I speak, the same oath Balaam once bound himself by at Num 22:18 against a king's pressure to bless what should not be blessed. The exchange runs word for word with 1 Ki 22:13-14, where the parallel is already named.

2 Chronicles 18:14-17

Micaiah's first answer mimics the four hundred exactly, go ye up, and prosper, and they shall be delivered into your hand, and Ahab recognizes mockery rather than agreement and presses him again for the truth in the name of the Lord. The true vision follows, I did see all Israel scattered upon the mountains, as sheep that have no shepherd, an image Moses used pleading for a successor at Num 27:17 so the congregation would not be left without one. The New Testament returns to the same picture when Jesus sees the crowds and is moved with compassion, because they fainted and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd, at Matt 9:36. Chronicles keeps the oracle unchanged from 1 Ki 22:15-17.

2 Chronicles 18:18-22

Micaiah answers Ahab's contempt with a second vision, the Lord sitting on his throne and all the host of heaven standing on his right hand and on his left, weighing who shall entice Ahab to his death at Ramoth-gilead. A spirit volunteers to be a lying spirit in the mouth of all the prophets, and the Lord grants it, thou shalt entice him, and thou shalt also prevail. Chronicles keeps this scene nearly identical to 1 Ki 22:19-23, and the readings on how the spirit's permission holds together with God's justice, a real agent under judicial sentence for some, a self-deceived king simply handed over to his own choice for others, are already named in full in that chapter's exposition.

2 Chronicles 18:23-24

Zedekiah's blow and his taunt, which way went the Spirit of the Lord from me to speak unto thee, assumes his own prophesying carried the Spirit and Micaiah's could not. Micaiah does not argue the point; he answers with a forward word instead, thou shalt see on that day when thou shalt go into an inner chamber to hide thyself, a private reckoning promised for a public lie. The exchange matches 1 Ki 22:24-25 without variation.

2 Chronicles 18:25-27

The king of Israel orders Micaiah imprisoned on bread and water of affliction until I return in peace, and Micaiah stakes his whole office on the outcome, if thou certainly return in peace, then hath not the Lord spoken by me. It is the test Deut 18:22 sets for a true prophet, fulfillment or failure, and Micaiah calls the people themselves to witness the wager before the battle rather than after, hearken, all ye people. Wesley reads the sentence to a prison cell as the common lot of faithful ministers, hated and ill treated for being true to God, with the day of battle left to declare who was right.

2 Chronicles 18:28-31

went up to Ramoth–gilead: Ahab disguises himself for the battle and asks Jehoshaphat to wear the royal robes, a plan that shifts the danger the oracle named for Ahab onto his ally instead, and Syria's captains, ordered to fight only the king of Israel, close on Jehoshaphat's robes and nearly kill him. Verse 31 carries a line with no parallel in Kings at all, Jehoshaphat cried out, and the Lord helped him, and God moved them to depart from him, a sentence Barnes calls a pious reflection tracing the deliverance to its real source, the kind of addition the Chronicler makes throughout the book. The same cry and the same help are the pattern Jehoshaphat leans on again at 20:12, eyes lifted to God with no other resource named.

2 Chronicles 18:32-34

Once the captains see it is not the king of Israel they turn back, but a certain man drew a bow at a venture and struck Ahab between the joints of the harness, the one place the disguise left open. The Targum, recorded by Clarke, names the archer Naaman and reads the chance shot as the fulfillment of both Elijah's word against Ahab and Micaiah's vision of his death at Ramoth-gilead. Chronicles stops at Ahab's death at sundown and moves straight to Jehoshaphat's return in the next chapter, dropping the pool of Samaria where the dogs licked his blood and the regnal obituary that closes 1 Ki 22:37-40, because the book's interest lies with Jehoshaphat and not with Ahab's fuller record.
