2 Chronicles 10:1-2

Shechem carries its own history: Joshua renewed the covenant there in Josh 24, and Abimelech was crowned king there in disaster in Judg 9, so all Israel gathering on that ground to make Rehoboam king already signals a coronation under negotiation rather than a formality. Jeroboam is recalled from the Egypt he fled to escape Solomon's hand in 1 Ki 11:40, and his return puts Ahijah's anointed man on the ground before the assembly ever meets. Chronicles opens the scene exactly as 1 Ki 12:1-2 does; the parallel's blow-by-blow belongs to the Kings exposition, and this chapter's own weight falls later, at verse 15.

2 Chronicles 10:3-5

The tribes state their grievance in one clause, ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, naming the forced labor and taxation that built the temple and Solomon's court. Rehoboam asks three days, a delay that reads as prudence but becomes the space in which he changes counselors. Nothing in the request itself is rebellion; it is a petition a wise king could have answered without losing half a kingdom.

2 Chronicles 10:6-9

Rehoboam consults two councils in succession, the old men who had stood before Solomon and the young men brought up with him, and the text marks the shift as a choice: he forsook the counsel of the old men before he ever asked the young men. The old men's answer is a rule of kingship, not flattery: if thou be kind to this people, and please them, and speak good words to them, they will be thy servants for ever. Wesley reads the king's turn away from that counsel as God leaving Solomon's son to act as unwisely as Solomon himself had acted once he declined from the Lord.

2 Chronicles 10:10-11

The young men's counsel turns Rehoboam's father's language into open threat: my little finger shall be thicker than my father's loins, and where Solomon chastised with whips, Rehoboam will chastise with scorpions, an image of stinging multiplication rather than plain severity. Barnes and Clarke both read the boast as court flattery dressed up as strength, spoken by men who had grown up beside the king and never carried a burden themselves. The words are theirs, not counsel forced on Rehoboam, and the next unit shows him making them his own.

2 Chronicles 10:12-14

The third day brings Jeroboam and the people back exactly as arranged, and Rehoboam answers roughly, repeating the young men's threat almost word for word as his own. Verse 13 names the choice a second time, forsook the counsel of the old men, so the narrative brackets the whole scene with the same verdict at its start and its close. Chronicles gives this repetition no more comment than Kings does; the moral is left to stand in the doubled statement rather than an added verdict.

2 Chronicles 10:15

Here Chronicles states outright what Samuel and Kings leave the reader to infer from the narrative alone: the king hearkened not unto the people, for the cause was of God, that the Lord might perform his word, which he spake by the hand of Ahijah the Shilonite. That word is the prophecy of 1 Ki 11:29-39, the torn garment and the ten pieces, spoken years before Rehoboam ever opened his mouth to the assembly. Rehoboam's folly and the young men's flattery remain real causes at the human level, and Henry reads the verse as showing that with him are strength and wisdom, both the deceived and the deceiver made use of to serve his purposes, without either cause dissolving the other.

2 Chronicles 10:16

Israel's cry, what portion have we in David, and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse, borrows the words Sheba raised against David a generation earlier at 2 Sam 20:1, a rebellion the united kingdom survived once already. This time the slogan lands and the tribes go home for good: every man to your tents, O Israel, closes a scene that opened with all Israel gathered to crown a son of David. Commentators note the bitterness of and now, David, see to thine own house, spoken over Solomon's own son as though David himself still sat in Jerusalem to be dismissed.

2 Chronicles 10:17-19

Chronicles keeps only the ten tribes' rebellion, Hadoram's stoning, and the flight to Jerusalem, then stops: it never follows Jeroboam north to the golden calves at Bethel and Dan or narrates a single reign of the northern kingdom on its own terms, the material 1 Ki 12:25 through 2 Kings carries at length. The book's stated method is at work in the omission; the throne the Chronicler traces is Judah's and David's, and the northern kings will appear from here only where they touch it. Israel rebelled against the house of David unto this day marks the rupture as still open when the Chronicler writes, generations later, to a remnant left with only Judah's throne to remember.
