Shechem carries its own history: Joshua renewed the covenant there in Joshua 24, and Abimelech was made king there in Judges 9. Jeroboam returns from Egypt, “where he had fled from King Solomon,” so Ahijah's chosen man is on the ground before the assembly meets.

Jeroboam comes back from his refuge in Egypt. Verse 15 ties the whole scene to the word the LORD spoke through Ahijah the Shilonite. Henry says God is doing his own work through all the devices of men, and that the cause of the king's obstinacy was of God.
